Customizing The Menu

Greetings All,

I'm an IT professional (DSL network support) in Iowa and have been in IT for about 16 years. I'm fairly new to PortableApps, I've been playing with it off and on for maybe a year, but recently had my interest re-kindled and have been using it nearly exclusively for more than a week now, and I'm more than a little impressed.

Mostly what I use is a Firefox, Thunderbird (with lightning extensions, which are MOST impressive...), Notepad++, Filezilla, GNU Cash, KeePass, and the OpenOffice Suite. I've also installed Laridian's Pocket Bible which runs very nicely off a flash drive.

My question is, and I should preface by apologizing if this has come up before, would there be a way to customize the menu? To change the names of the applications, or the order, or to remove apps that you want on the flash drive but don't want on the menu? So far, I've only been able to add or take away from the menu by actually having the app installed or taken off. I think I'm going to be focusing on this a lot more seriously in the coming weeks and months.

Also, maybe a bit off topic, if I need to post in a different area I will, I'm interested in knowing what flash drives folks around here are finding the fastest out there.

Thanks all.

it'll be in the next version ...

Portable Apps Menu 1.5(or 2.0), which is being in nearly done development by John. It's supposed to have the renaming of files and folders, hiding exe's from the menu. Don't recall if I saw reordering of the apps.

There are mods to the PAM that can do what you want. The most popular seems to be R31, https://portableapps.com/node/13642 though as noted elsewhere, the good mod developers are working on being intergrated into the official PAM releases, so it should all be one nice package.

Eventually. Smile

Thanks for the update

How cool. I'll look very forward to that. Is there a hopeful release date? I mean, is that something to look for next week or will it be fall of '09? Not to hold anyone to any dates or anything, just looking for an idea.

not as I recall ...

any target date other than 'soon'.

If you really need those features, download the R31, lots of folks like it. I haven't yet, even though the hiding exe and folder options are things I'd like. I just decided to wait for it and muck about in Explore in the Menu.

Oh, I have been using my Sandisk Cruzer Titanium 8gb (and my 4gb for backup). I can't really tell any slow speeds except from the incredibly cheap 1 or 2gb ones I get from IT promos. Smile

I love my Cruzer because of the pretty blue light and that I don't have a cap to lose. I like retractable, be then pens, doors or pendrives.

Thanks again

Thanks again. I don't really "need" to be able to customize the start menu, I've just gotten anal over the years about how I like my menu to look (names as short as possible) and so forth. I may try R31 although I wonder if it'll impact the ability to do a smooth upgrade when the time comes.

Thanks also for the info about flash drives. I wasn't even aware the Cruzer 8 gig was available in Titanium yet, but I'm jealous. I've been a Cruzer fan forever, currently I'm using a 4 gig which seems to have enough storage space that I can't justify buying a bigger one. Sad I too like that there are no caps to loose.

Thanks again.

There should be no problem

There should be no problem switching back from r31 to the new Official PAM when it comes out.

since 1gb ...

I've been a fan of the cruzer titanium. It's been dropped out of a moving car, out a 5th story window and a run over by van. Smile Scratched, but fine.

Yeah, 8gb is more than I need. I think w/ all my programs and whatever miscellaneous files I use during a given week, it's 2-3gb that I need.

It's like people's harddrives, for regular use, barring your music and videos, most offices use around 3-8gb of a 80-250 gb harddrive Smile

I only ever go above my norm unless I have a specific task, like video or music editing, or I'm transfering peoples files around computers offline.
