I've been having problems with TBP v2.0.0.14 and FFP3 RC1 crashing without it being used, i.e sitting idle in the background. Once they've crashed and sometimes even when they did not crash (not started yet since last reboot) they would not start again/at all. Sometimes when trying to restart them they just crash with the same unexpected error but other times they simply die quietly, i.e. the .exe just disappears from the task manager processes.
Once OOPv2.4 did not want to start either with an error missing one of the installed components.
This only seems to happen when I run VMWare Server v1.05 and possibly only even when my Win2003 Server EE running IBM Information Server is up and running.
It does not seem to happen on a similar spec'ed machine (same memory, but slower processor) running VMWare Player v2.0.3.
Did anyone else experience something similar?
Can it possibly be a memory issue? I have XP SP3 Dual core notebook with 2GB RAM of which the virtual machine can use 1.6GB (when/if available). The machine is thus working hard and most likely running low on memory, but I can't say for sure as I do not know how to interpret the new PF Usage graph in Task Manager.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Paul
I've noticed VMWare Workstation causing issues with multiple programs including the Delphi IDE and Photoshop CS2. So, I've stopped using VMWare except when testing and then I make sure that nothing else that it may interfere with is running. Sometimes, it still requires a reboot to get it working properly again.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hi John,
Thanks for confirming this as for a moment I thought I might have bigger problems.
VMPlayer (at least v2.0.3) seemed stable enough as I could work for an entire day without any crashing and even run two virtual machines at the same time.
I will see if I can run the player and the server on the same machine as I cannot do without my PortableApps while playing in VMWare.
Regards
Paul
Ps. OK, I can confirm that after upgrading to VMPlayer 2.0.4, it now causes TBP & FFP to crash as on the machine with VMServer.
I am running vista ultimate as my main os but im using vmware to run my XP SP3. Are u asking if its a memory issue between the host pc or the virtual machine? When you create a new virtual machine, it gives you an amount that says anything beyond that and your pc will basically suck because you will have memory swapping and that kills the pc. I know, Ive done it. I have only had maybe two instances where a portable app has crashed. I dont see a reason for it to crash except for the memory swapping... Take a look at your settings for the virtual os and let us know... it would be interesting to find out

Hi Stephen,
My guest/virual OS (Win20003 Server) is set to only use 1,2GB of the 2GB in the machine.
What I thought was that when memory becomes a problem, i.e. Host uses 1GB and Guest uses 1.1GB, then the host starts getting memory issues which TBP, FFP, etc cannot handle.
If I interpret the PF Usage correctly then the virtual/Guest runs at about 1.3GB once all the processes are running.
Does this give you the info you were looking for?
