FF3 RC1 is 100MB

The new firefox3 folder is over 100MB. I knew this seemed huge so I went looking for the culprit. I found a file in /FirefoxPortableTest/Data/profile. The file is urlclassifier3.sqlite and it is 53.6MB. Does anybody know what this file is and why it is so big?

John Should Tell Users About This

Maybe John should make a note about this somewhere. I know I can turn off options, and delete the file, but will the browser still be protected from phishing sites? Is there another way to do this without having to download the data to my flash drive? This could be a big problem down the line for new users who will have no idea why their drive is running out of space.

Options Change?

Did you change any options? Corrupt something with an unsafe eject? It should only be about 2MB. Never seen it get so big.

No changes

No. I mean I changed some tab options, but nothing related to security. After reading the link above I went ahead and disabled the "attack site" and "forgery" options and deleted the file. It did come back but it is only 32KB. I'll try re-enabling those options and see what happens to the file size. There were some people on the mozillazine site that has a file size of 12-14MB. So I still think some note about this should be made since you can't disable these options by default.

Others in the Mozilla forums

Others in the Mozilla forums are talking about this.
Could the testers here give feed back on what size they are seeing.

ca. 50MBs is seeming common.

Local

My local install of Firefox 3 RC1 which has been my primary browser since it was released is only a bit over 2MB.

Interesting

Interesting, my urlclassifier2.sqlite in FFP2 is 3.6 MBs and I'm sure urlclassifier3.sqlite has got to be bigger than urlclassifier2.sqlite

Downloaded and installed FFP3 RC

Downloaded and installed FFP3 RC and installed less than 1/2 hour ago.
urlclassifier3.sqlite is currently 11,132 KB after less than a half hour on a T1 connection.

This is the first and only time I have installed and run it.

No settings changed (hate the look by the way)

Mine's 55MB also.

I just deleted it so we'll see how big it gets.

Back up to 23.5 MB after a day

So after about a day of use, and upgrading to FF3 RC2, the file is 23.5MB. It seems like it's on its way to becoming the 53MB file I had before.

I think I'm going to disable the phishing filters, but I would like to know what this is going to effect and if there is a way to have this enabled without having the file downloaded to my flash drive.

Well if you want to detect

Well if you want to detect phishing sites (bogus sites that look like the original and trying to get you to enter your password and other information) you will need the file as that contains all the information of known phishing sites.

(It's the same as you were asking to use a anti virus without downloading the virus definition database)

I noticed after first start

I noticed after first start (to change some settings including turning off autoupdate and the phishing site detection.) I closed FF3RC2 and I found the file to be 11MB. I have deleted the file.

you have to turn of phishing

you have to turn of phishing site detection else it would just re-download the list I guess.

Just chiming in

I too have a huge urlclassifier3.sqlite file. Mine is currently 48.7 MB. Since I have an 8 GB drive it is not a huge space-waster, but it is 132% of the size of the app itself. Seems kind of wasteful to me.
Now my question: is Firefox 2.0 less safe because it doesn't have this urlclassifier3.sqlite file? Would deleting it in Firefox 3.0 make security equal 2.0?

Clarification,

Clarification,

Firefox 2.0 uses urlclassifier2.sqlite, which is just phishing sites.

Firefox 3.0 uses urlclassifier3.sqlite, which is phishing sites And malware sites.

Therefore deleting [and deactivating] it would make FF3 security [to use your term] less than FF2.
