I'd very much like to build my own .exe file that redirects to the application path, but I don't feel like reinventing the wheel here. What program can I use to decompile for instance FirefoxPortable.exe and read what it does, modify it and use it for my own app?

The source code for the application launcher is included with the release. It is in the Other\Source folder. The launchers are made using NSIS which is very simple to use. I hope I answered your question.
