Firefox 3 & Firefox 2

What if I use Firefox 3 Portable and Firefox 2 Portable at the same time? Will they be able to work independently from each other at the same time? Is that possible? Anybody of you ever tried this? I know that 2 instances of the same version can not work at the same time. But what if I use 2 different versions at the same time? Would they work properly?

You Can

You can. The same way you can do multiple instances of FF Portable 2 at the same time. You need to set multiple instances to true. Directions are in the help.html file. Just click on the link for advanced options.

Keep in mind that this will leave stuff behind on every computer you use. And it may cause other issues. In other words, it's unsupported and you do so at your own risk.

Thank you

Oh, I see. Since it can leave stuff behind and cause issues I won't even bother trying. I will simply use different browsers at the time (well, there are only few worth to try, FFP, Safari, Opera).

Thanks for helping me. Smile

Multiple instances of FFPortable can really leave stuff behind?

Are multiple instances really unsafe and might leave data? I changed the INI file last year when I learned the trick, which allowed me to run two FirefoxPortable2s on my laptop, one for work Gmail, one for home Gmail. The work one I synchronized with a USB disk to use around work. But all of these FirefoxPortable2s were set to AllowMultipleInstances=true ... are you saying now that my USB disk FirefoxPortable2 could have been leaving information behind on whatever work computer I was using?
Thanks for any clarification.

Yes, traces

Yes, it leaves traces behind. Specifically, it can leave a couple of empty folders and your plugin registry in APPDATA on the local PC. Firefox 3 can also leave an extensions and crash reports folder. This has always been the case with the AllowMultipleInstances switch and it's only been recommended to use it on your own PC with Firefox already installed on it.
