Using Portable Apps on a Win 98 Computer

I have access at one location to an old computer running Windows 98 SE. When I try to use the latest Firefox Portable (v 3.0) it won't load but the older v.2.x did. Can anyone explain why? Is V 3.0 only for Win XP and Vista?

3.0 = Windows 2000+

Firefox 3.0 only works with Windows 2000 and later. You can expect Thunderbird 3.0 and Sunbird 1.0 to similarly drop support for Windows 95/98/Me. OpenOffice.org 3 also drops support for Windows 9x.

Each app has a Download Details section that lists what operating systems it works with. Some software does not support Windows 9x (Firefox 3, Task Coach, FileZilla, InfraRecorder, PokerTH). Some software will only work on Windows 9x with files added or special configuration changes made (VLC, Pidgin, etc).

Firefox 2.x

Thanks, John. Do you know if it's still possible to get a copy of Firefox 2 so I can put it back on the drive I use when I have to use the Win 98 computer?

Yes

Here is the link to the Sourceforge page where the older releases are.

Other Versions

If you look on the Firefox Portable homepage, you'll see a link below the Download button that says "Other Versions". This scrolls the page down to the Other Versions section. That's where you can get 2.0.0.14 and, tomorrow, 2.0.0.15. We'll be releasing 2.x for the next few months until Mozilla drops support for it.
