no autorun.inf read

OK, it is a kind of FAQ, but search did not really help me so far.

On one XP-pro at work, all is fine, the autorun.inf is read on connecting the usb stick, choose portableapps and all is fine.

On othe XP-pro, the stick is recognised, it is assigned a drive letter, but the ICON is not displayed and also no menu for choosing portableapps comes up.
The autorun.inf is not read.

Tried all obvious, the two known microsoft helper software, searched settings, checked the setting in properties of the drive, all seems to be set correctly and did work well until some days ago. I do not recall doing any changes or updates then.

Still the autorun.inf is not read.

Any help?

Autoplay?

Is AutoPlay turned on for the machines that won't autorun?

You have to make sure that AutoPlay is turned on for both the drive letter AND the drive type. For example, autoplay can be turned on for CDs but not external removable drives.

TweakUI (from Microsoft) makes it easy to change the settings.

its on

as far as I can see it.
But probably some registry keys are still not correctly on, but I have no idea where to look for them.

From all the GUI things all looks as if it is OK, same as on my other machine in the office, where all works nice.

What GUI?

Where are you seeing that it is the same?

Did you try http://www.portablefreeware.com/?q=tweakui ? It allows easy view/mod of BOTH settings that I mentioned.

tweakui on both

computers installed, on both the same settings. The removable drives also ticked in autoplay, all drive letters ticked etc. Can not see any difference so far. Both XP pro german. On both system all did work well until some days ago.

The only difference is, that on one computer I get the autoplay, the autorun.inf is read, the drive has also icon, the menu for the choice of what to do is displayed.

On the other computer, the autorun.inf seem not to be read since there is the standard MS Icon on the drive itself and the start menu is not present.

Mostly when something does not work this way, I try to unmount the drive, then stick it in again, often it does repair itself then. This time this did not work even efter number of mount unmout sequencies.

ok test

So far:
have downloaded the test file, opened it first, then inserted the stick, OK, the drive letter was shown and the PA started, but the autoplay option menu is not displayed.

If the file is not run, the drive will get the letter, will be shown as removable but will not display the autoplay options and the icon will be the standard one of MS.

Checkd with all things I know of, tweak ui, all is ticked right there. Still on one machine all works, on the other not.

The microsoft files did not help so far, they claim no problems, and if they are some they can not be solved.

it was hard day

since I tried to check all the keys in registry stated in the MS kb , but all was OK. I tried all the settings with all possible gui tools like tweakui, but all was set there fine, no cure.

I have resignated and pulled back system recovery from abt one month ago, now all is fine again, but I have no clue why.
