testing USB drive speed

How does one test the speed of USB drives? Is there a free test utility out there.

There have been a number of threads here where someone is complaining about speed (or lack thereof).

It could also be useful when buying a new drive- buy it, test it, if too slow return it.

It would be nice to have a single standard test that we could use. Results could even be added to a summary chart here.

only tests read speed

Unfortunately this free version only tests read speed.

Any other suggestions for a free benchmark test?

The only way I found (which gives at least an information) is to use EF commander. This is a file manager but when copying file (with e.g. F5) you get a status information of the current transmission speed.

I found nothing else that worked with a USB drive and gave write speeds.
