I have been running U3 solely because of its auto run feature and launchpad with password access, which I like for security against casual hackers. But this requires more clicks than I'd like in order to get to the PA menu and from there launch a PA app. Then on shutdown I have to remember to close both PA and U3.
Can I eliminate U3 altogether, then upon flash drive insertion be prompted for a password, and then have the PA menu launch automatically?
No and kinda.
You will lose the password protection part when you eliminate U3.
You can get the PAM to "pseudo" launch automatically but you will need to confirm the operation with a click.
True Autolaunching is looked down upon nowadays and even the latest versions of U3 no longer use it.
There are by the way ways of putting a short cut to the PAM on the U3 menu and having the U3 LaunchPad auto-run the PAM but I'll let others get into that.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

Can anyone provide a pointer?
Thanks.
smithtech has a shortcut creator for the u3 menu that you can use to insert a shortcut into the u3 menu. once you have inserted the shortcut, you can go into the u3 settings menu and select program settings. after the window pops up, there should be a list of the apps installed under u3 including the PApps Menu shortcut. once you have found the shortcut for the menu, click on it once and find the little checkbox that says something like "Run application on insertation" and check that and apply. after that, eject and re-insert your u3 drive and the PAM should pop up soon after.
