Why don't Portableapps write to registry?

I am very curious to know, out of interest alone.

I am totally amazed how easy it is to use these apps, and when I created a new TrueCrypt file, all I had to do was drag all the files over, and that was it! So easy!

So I am confused.... How is that possible?

When we install applications such as firefox, vlc, thunderbird etc, they always write stuff into the registry.

So how do portableapps still work and run without writing and reading anything into the registry?

Thanks.

But They Do!

Ahh, but they do my friend. Smile They back up local application registry entries, import the portable ones, and remove them on exit. The latest technique John's implemented should even remove the entries if the computer crashes or stuff like that.

Just Curious

Blum There's a program that can "Thinstall" some programs making it portable. Do you know if that one writes registries into the system or just the folder inside the usb :P?

Just curious Smile it's ok if you don't know

They do what Patrick? I

They do what Patrick? I changed to a totally new hard drive, totally new partition and totally different and new folder. I then dragged my whole Portableapps folder into new folder. And all the Portableapps still loaded as normal. How is that possible if the last portableapps partition and folder was written into registry?

Or do you mean that all these apps will work and run normally anywhere you have them, but the first time they are loaded, they write something into the Windows Registry? If so, how do I now clean out the old registry entries that PortableApps wrote from my other partition and folder?

Try To Follow

Okay, hopefully this will make it easier.

1. Run Application Portable
2. Application Portable backs up local Application registry entries (if any)
3. Application Portable writes new registry entries
4. Close Application Portable
5. Application Portable removes registry entries from registry and saves them to drive (leaving none in registry)
6. Application Portable puts local Application entries back into place
7. No portable registry entries left from Application Portable besides the MRU (most recently used) list, that Windows uses to keep a track of the MRU programs.

On next run, step 3 changes to Application Portable imports entries from drive.
