Hi, my fist post here. (BTW: I had some problems with registering. Most of my existing and valid email addresses have not been detected as valid)
First of all thanks for your work.
I used the forum search and found nothing. I hope it does not already exist.
I use the v 5.0.3 (but it effects on all versions) on XP (SP3)
The "problem" I have is related to the point that a folder is created in "*\Documents and Settings\username\temp\" with a random name. Within the folder a .tmp file is created and executed. It's a random name, too.
My firewall (Comodo) notifies me about new executables that want to run. It notified my about Notpad++ too, so I allowed it and the firewall created a rule for it. Every time I open Notepad++ portable a randomly named file is created. I allow every new .tmp file. Every new one is located in another folder with another name. I can't create a rule for it.
The question now. Is it possible to name the file and folder not randomly?
Something like *\Documents and Settings\username\temp\notepad\note.tmp With a static name I could create a rule for it.
Maybe there is an way to stop creating a folder and the tmp file. Something I have to write into the ini?
Thanks for your help.
there isnt.
All Apps from this site (except one) use a Launcher to ensure portability and take care of all the settings. In addition to that the Launcher displays a splash screen.
There is a plugin which enables the Launcher to display the splash screen and it is this plugin that creates the folder with the random name. As far as I know, there is no way to change that behaviour.
And welcome to PortableApps.com

Thanks for your help.
If I don't use "Notepad++ portable.exe" I don't get a splash screen (not my target) and no .tmp is executed. I use Notepad++ in the app folder. The nativelang.xml is kept. No problems. If no one tells me a good reason to use the launcher I simply don't use it.
Thanks, currently I use Firefox3portable, Keepass portable, PokerTH portable and Notepad++ portable of course. I used Gimp once, I don't use it often so I don't want to install it. Maybe I try the portable version.
you use notepad++.exe directly in the App folder, you have to know what you're doing.
That is because then you don't have the launcher moving your plugins to the right folder, adjusting the drive letter in your "recently used files"-list and you will leave a registry key behind.
If you dont care about these things , you can run it directly, but I wouldn't do it with all Applications without informing myself what the Launcher does. Because you might leave personal data behind.

It's not the folder that's triggering the Comodo firewall, it's a specific process. Comodo is really touchy and has false alarms like that. I've been updating the launchers to attempt to work around this issue. Notepad++'s launcher is only 1/2 updated, so it will still alarm.

I moved back to the launcher. Thanks for the reasons
I know that's not the folder it's the .tmp file.
Thanks
This is just a suggestion,
It may not work for you.
I had a similar situation with Thunderbird Portable and McAfee.
McAfee has a rule to alert me when programs try to run from, or things in, the temp folder.
I created a "rule" to allow Thunderbird Portable to run things in the temp directory.
Perhaps, this would work for you if Comodo allows that degree of fine tuning.
To be clear, I am not saying to allow the "event" or folder, which you have already tried, but to allow the program, Notepad ++ Portable, to have an exception which would allow it to do what Comodo is finding suspicious.
Hopefully something like this is possible for you. You would have to check Comodo's documentation to find out just what it is alerting you to, and what rules you can create which can be bypassed for a particular program.
Good Luck,
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Thanks for that suggestion. I can allow Notepad++ portable to do everything, but those rights are not exceeded to the created .tmp
I get notified that a new application wants to run and that these application tries to execute cmd.exe
The only way is training mode or disabling the feature. I had this problem with PokerTH portable, too. It disappeared. Maybe this is the change of the launcher.
It's ok, maybe the launcher is changed one day or I find another way.
EDIT: It worked partly. It's half the way. I got the firewall to do what you suggested now notepad++ portable is allowed to execute temporary files. Now I get only notified that a tmp file want's to run cmd.exe Thanks.
This issue should be fixed in the 5.3 release with a new launcher using a move function from hea/haustin.
