Hello everybody,
I don't remember if this issue has already been posted here. I was wondering about the possibility to carry portable apps on the memory card of a mobile phone.
I am planning to buy someday a new mobile phone and I was wondering if when connecting one to a Personal Computer, the latter can see the memory card directly or if you always have to pass through some sync software.
Do you have any idea?
Thanks
Does it act like a USB?

Well yes... but mine was a question
I can write it this way: "Does anyone know if memory card on a mobile phone act like usb stick?"
that's the short answer, plain and simple the most modern GSM phones won't act like a usb mass storage device (unless you got a Symbian os 9.x phone, which are still in beta..) but there are some apps for Windowzzzz smartphones wich turn it into usb mass storage devices so the memory card can be accesed. Also some older smarphones (like the N-gage) can act like an USB mass storage device but no garanties...
See also http://www.softick.com/pocket-pc/cardexport2/
for details.

I'll wait for a stable Symbian 9.x or buy a Windows Mobile phone... I suppose it will not be possible in any case to boot from the memory card right?
N-Gage is what I was thinking about.

I can save data on my memory card for my cell phone but I have to actually take the card out of the phone and insert it into a card reader (portable USB card reader) in order to transfer data to the computer. I believe that I could transfer directly to the computer if I had a blutooth enabled computer or a cable that would connect the phone and the computer. (I remember reading about transfering mp3 files via bluetooth in the owners manual)
True
But if you would like to use a phone as a mass storage device it wouldn't work... Via BT sharing files is ok but using the phone as a external hdd is something different.
Been there, done that.. For s60 devices you would have to clone the Msuite compinents and let them talk to M$ exploder...
Even for both Palm and Windowz machines it difficult to achive, there are some apps to colne your device as a mass storage device or cardreader.
I read a test on an Italian mobile phone site about Nokia N80 model. It uses symbian 9.x and it seems it can act as a storage device. I don't post the link because I don't know how many of yo know Italian.
The sad thing about this phone is the price: around 650 Euro.
Woah! 650 euro? That's like $800 USD!
Hi,
I must admit that it was this weekend that we had a little meeting with the PDAtotaal community and that I had the pleasure to play with some beta devices, currently I can only speak off the E70 and the E61 (NDA...) and they where great. They both were very very fast (with the latest beta release off os) and giving a presentation was a breaze (yep, screen export via BT connected to the beamer...). Had a change to hang them onto a Archos PMA 400 and indeed the device worked like a standard USB mass storage device should do. The system folders are well hidden though so you cannot mess in it...

Hahaha. Seriously though, that's A LOT of money. Way more than I'd ever pay for a cell phone.
cannot say very much at this moment, but there are some (more then 3) devices wich are going to be released the next few days.
And these "phones" are far more then just gsm. They do almost the same as your desktop (office, internet, mail, voip via SIP, remote acces etc)
I think that i the near future the most people will only carry their handheld with them and use them both as phone as well as their computer for bussines activaties..... When I've got a version wich can go publiek I'll post a comment here.
They are roughly (E series) put aty the european market for about 600 euro's tats without a carrier contrat, they should do anything between 150 till 450 euros with a decent contract.
A nice picture you would here http://www.jtsoftbytes.nl/fotos/fa_pdatotaal_gd_(22-04-2006)/DSC02464.JPG

Sorry. I don't care how many features a phone has or how PC-like its user interface is; it'll never replace my PC. The screen is far too small, for one thing. I'd much rather use a laptop, heavy as they are. You also can't really do touch-typing on a phone keypad. Not very well, anyway. The keys are too small.

I have no witty remarks or quotes to share at the moment.
the most fabulous on this device is that it carries the option to reproduce its screen via BT in vga, so you can use it to give pressentations via a BT beamer or use it to project it on your tft monitor.... Als you can use your normal BT desktop keyboard to type your emails and office documents. so thats ver very close in use to your desktop.... thats what I meant.
And having a pc in your pocket is superb.

Wow, that's over a billon Turkish Lira!
Well, it seems I started a currency conversion fever.
Maybe it's time for a portable currency conversion app?
PS The E series phone seems very intresting
