Getting 2 Firefoxes to show up as different items in suite

I downloaded portable apps for my usb drive so the computers that I use at school can have all the programs I need. Unfortunately, some of the computers run Windows 98. This means I can't use firefox 3 with them. I downloaded firefox 2 and installed it in a different folder so i can use the features of firefox 3 when i had a compatable computer. I would like to know how to make the entrys in the suite to show up differently so one shows firefox 3 and the other shows firefox 2. is there any way to do this?

Few Options

Unfortunately, renaming is not supported in the current release of the menu. However, there's a few other options. First off, if you rename the folders to FirefoxPortable2 and FirefoxPortable3, the former will show up before the latter in the menu. However, you can also use the unsupported 'PAM Mod' until the renaming feature is supported officially. Lastly, I can recompile the launchers with the names changed accordingly for you, but if there's a change in either of the launchers in new releases, it would require a recompile. It's also easy to recompile them yourself it you want me to let you know how.

Also, welcome to PortableApps.com, enjoy your stay. Smile

Instructions:

First of all, you will need NSIS. The easiest way to do this will be to get NSIS Portable.
Then, just open NSIS and drag Other\Source\FirefoxPortable.nsi into the NSIS window. NOTE: Firefox's launcher is digitally signed, and recompiling it will lose that signing. This probably isn't an issue though. Also, if you install a newer version, your modifications will be lost.

I presume also that you want to rename it, not just recompile it :P. To do that, open FirefoxPortable.nsi in a text editor (like Notepad++ Portable) and modify the line that says

!define PORTABLEAPPNAME "Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition"

Modify "Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition" to whatever you want (but make sure you leave the quotation marks around it, or else it won't recompile.) Then feed it through NSIS once more.

Good luck with doing that, and good luck with Intel! Oh, and welcome to the PortableApps.com community Biggrin
