Whenever I try to run portableapps from the dialog that pops up on inserting the USB disk I get a message that start.exe cannot be found.
Is start.exe supposed to be in Windows itself or on the portableapps disk?

The autorun.inf is supposed to point to StartPortableApps.exe which then launches the menu. Not sure what start.exe is. I'd suggest reinstalling the platform. It's under 1MB download. Install right to the root directory and it'll fix the autorun and the associated components:
