Chromium Portable (now with Flash portable howto)

Hi,

I did a portable starter with autoit for the chromium browser (not chrome). I've not played with chrome yet, only with chromium so far. If you unpack the file you have a Chromium-Starter.exe and a Other-folder. Before you start the exe please close all other chrome/chromium-windows. The exe will check on http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snapshots/chromium-rel-xp/ for the latest successful build, download it and unpack it. Then it will start chrome and change your chromium "client_id" to a lot of "1111". Just let it do its work. After that you can use chrome as you like. The Data-directory with your preferences and the App-Directory are created on first run.
3 Gimmicks i've added so far:
Start the exe and hold the left shift-key to start chromium in incognito-mode.
Start the exe and hold the left ctrl-key to check for a new successful build and install it.
Copy "Chromium-Starter.exe" to "Chromium-Starter anonym.exe" to start in incognito mode (If you press/hold left shift after starting the "Chromium-Starter anonym.exe", it will start in "normal"-mode.

This is just a piece of Software i did for myself, but i hope you like it, too. It works fine on all of my computers, so it should hopefully work on yours, too. But don't blame me if not.

http://www.mediafire.com/?zvvxlwltwxz "Version 20080927_5"

Update 20080927_5:
*i'm going nuts with this tray-menu. it should work now without getting stuck.
*fixed: the change of userdir will affect on next start of chromium. you can change anytime, but the starter will take care of it on the NEXT startup.
Update 20080927_4:
*little bug with the tray-config-window fixed
Update 20080927_3:
*pretty busy today ;-). Added a little menu to the trayicon to let you change settings of the starter
Update 20080927_2:
*switched to regular expressions to detect the chromium-browser window.
*added a switch to allow you to use a userdir on the host. The user-dir
will be copied from the usb-stick to the host and moved back when you close
chromium. If you use the starter from your hdd, you don't have to switch this on.
if you are using this on "internet-cafe" computers, i recommend to NOT switch this on.
Update 20080927:
*Changed the Updater. On your first start you can choose if it should update every succesful build or hide the icon. If you choose "autoupdate" it will show the installed and the online version in the download-window.
Update 20080919:
*Fixed a bug in autoupdate
*At first startup you'll be asked for "Hide trayicon" and "Check for update automatically"
Update 20080917_2:
* Damn Progressbar disappeared... fixed now
* put NPSWF32.dll to "Other/plugins"-folder to have flash portable. It will be copied on runtime to the specific folder. NPSWF32.dll is not included, but on most systems it should be under "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\".
use http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/de/flashplayer/help/sett... to disable flashcookies if you don't like them Wink
Update 20080917:
* Made starter act more reliable on recognising the pressed keys (shift/ctrl)
* Some changes to handle the AutoIt WinWait better
Update 20080916:
* Changed foldernames to be more like Portableapps-standard

For portable Flash:
copy NPSWF32.dll from "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\" to
"Google Browser\App\plugins". I used the brand new Flash 10 and it works like a charm
P.S. updated the flash-thing on 20080917_2

Seems good, added it to my portable apps menu, everything is working fine, even holding left shift / ctrl, but when I hold shift, and exit the browser, the script wont shutdown, any clues? . And another thing, can you fix so the update isn't "always on top" ? For me it went pretty fast but if you have a slow connection it could get very annoying. And oh, do you know if you can get GreaseMetal working? Its greasemonkey for Chrome Biggrin

GreaseMetal

Hi,

I installed GreaseMetal but it seems to check some Registry-setting to find an installed chrome... Not really portable as i don't want to add anything to the registry. So to get this to work some things have to be changed in the GreaseMetal source to make it read not from registry but from some .ini-file. I'll have a look at the source this evening.

Is Chromium the developer version of Chrome? Or is it something else?

chromium is the open source

chromium is the open source browser Google comissioned, whereas Google Chrome is a branded, closed source version of Chromium.

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Actually the files that are used in my portable version are those of Chromium. I just called it Chrome Portable for people that did not know what Chromium would download it.

Then I think you should change the name to stop confusing people, so they not wonder why it not look like it does on their Chrome in the desktop, since chromium don't have the google logo and it looks different in some way, I think.

Hi Quinton, the big

Hi Quinton,

the big difference between chrome and chromium (and between your starter and my starter) is that chromium is nearly portable right out of the box. You could even start it with a batch-file "chrome.exe –user-data-dir=”ASYOULIKE". So as you see there's nothing done with any registry-hive moving and appdata moving around. It fires up in a couple of msecs and closes in same small time.
So we both do a different approach and these apps could not really be compared.
What i really didn't like was that the third post on my topic was not an "i found a error" or "could you fix something here", but only and nothing more than a link referencing to your topic. Hey quinton... is that nice? Not in my world. But hey, i don't care. Everbody should use what he likes. I did the starter for myself and just posted it here, because i really like the portable-apps idea. Just my two cents.

Leosmutter

P.S.
The Flash-Tip was nice, right ? Wink

How about fixing the temp

How about fixing the temp files also? Am I correct when I say that the cache is on the drive? Cause its really slow browsing. So possibly disable the cache or put it in the disk and on exit delete the temp folder?

EDIT: And maybe it can checks what version installed so it don't update to the same version Wink A relatively easy way (I think) would be to save the build number into a file and before it gets the new version it compares the filenames. Then you can possibly add auto update (with confirmation of course) Biggrin

Doesn't quinton's launcher (here) have auto-update? And I believe the latest launcher doesn't store the cache on the drive either (it's put in temp and deleted on exit). That's the one I'm using and it's worked very well for me so far. Way snappier than even the FFP 3.1 Speed Test. It's my new favorite browser.

Hi Toja

Two things:
1. This version-check is already included since the first autoupdate-version and it would never download a version twice. Anyway i updated the loader and you can check some settings on first run (Autoupdate / Hide Icon). If you turn autoupdate off, you can press ctrl when you start chromium to let it check for a newer succesful build. If there's something newer, it would be installed.
2. Temp-Files... Like i told on the very first post, i did this starter for my needs. So when i would like to have something portable, i don't want anything to be copied onto the host. if you store the user-data-dir on the host-computer this gives more speed for sure. But with my loader all data is on the stick. For me this is more "private" Smile

I see the logic, but Chromium is pretty much unusable with the cache and history being used directly on the stick. Seriously, it's worse than FFP, even with FFP's disk cache on.

A Chromium launcher I found somewhere else did this--kept all the user data on the stick--and it ran terribly. It was constantly writing to the drive, even when I wasn't actively browsing, and it just got worse the longer it ran. After about 5 minutes, I had to close it out because it was slowing all my other portable apps down, too.

I don't care about stealth because I have nothing to hide (and even if I did, I'd just switch into incognito mode). I just expect my apps to be fast. That's why I switched from FFP to quinton's Chromium launcher in the first place--it was a whole lot faster.

Chromium & the data-dir

Hi Bruce

I added a switch to allow you using a datadir on the host. The data-dir on the stick will be copied to the host and chromium uses this directory. If you close chromium the script will clear up the cache-dir and copy the data back to the stick.
Seems to work ok so far.

How do you stop the autoupdate from starting everytime you start the browser?

I don't know which version of my starter you use, but you could just open the Other/Version.ini and change [alwaysupdate] doit=1 to [alwaysupdate] doit=0. That's it. After that you could just press CTRL-key while startup and the loader will check for a new version.

Hello Leo

Leo I deleted the version of chromium you had on this page. Can you give me a download link again? The iron version doesn't work for me. Thx

here you go.

I didn't upload any new versions as i'm still working on some new things. My portable chromium is already capable of removing ALL traces from the host computer, even if you let it put the working-directory on the host-hdd for more surf-speed. I'll update the loader in this forum someday...

AutoIt error

Hi leosmutter,

first of all, I want to thak you for your hard work. Your portabe app seems to be just what I need, and I really appreciate the work of generous people like you.

Unfortunately, I can´t use this app. In case that it can help, I want to point I get this error whenever I try to install it:

____________

AutoIt error
Line-1:

Error: Array variable has incorrect number of subscripts or subscript dimension range exceeded.

____________

I don´t have the slightest idea of the meaning of that, I don´t know if I am the only one having this problem. Should you update your loader, I will surely try again to install it.

Thanks, again.

Old, not supported

This thread has been dead for two years. Nothing is happening with it. It's dealing with a now very old version of Chromium; you should use the official Google Chrome Portable instead - it works properly and is supported actively.

were you able to get it to work?

I run the updater and it downloads chrome-win32.zip but the file never actually saves anywhere to my PC so the app won't run.
