I link to my portable apps on my desktop and laptop. I figure that way the program doesn't get tied up in MS registry. Is that safe?? In other words, I am using the portableapps from the c:\ drive, not a USB.

Yes you are. However if you have some programs like OpenOffice you will need to ensure that the path they are in is not too long.

Cool. I wonder why more programs aren't developed like this because I had a computer programming friend say that the Windows registry is becoming a monstrosity.
Jon
"Is becoming monstrosity"?
1. Almost nothing changed about registry at least since Windows 95.
2. Having a central database of all settings is way cleaner solution than each program keeping settings in different format in different place. Several times faster too. A bit inconvenient for portable use though.

EARTH TO PEOPLE! It already is a monstrosity
iLike Macs, iPwn, However you put it... Apple is better ^_^
"Claiming that your operating system is the best in the world because more people use it is like saying McDonalds makes the best food in the world..."
Doesn't it seem like having a separate settings file rather than a giant database in a single file seem faster and safer though?
I mean, if one person does one stupid thing to the registry, that can screw up everything. As opposed to using separate files for settings, which makes removal cleaner and installation safer. That's the way it works in Ubuntu and I for one like that system much better.
