Exactly.

The biggest problem with Linux is that for almost every distribution you want a program to run on, it has to be recompiled for that platform. This is why I hate Linux.

Wine

All the portable apps have been confirmed to work within WINE at the moment.

If you know some Linux devs that want to work on portable apps, send em my way. There hasn't really been any developer interest.

Care to try?

Are you a Linux user? What apps do you use, and what distro do you use? You could make portable apps for use on your particular distro yourself... or just use WINE.

Currently there is a project

Currently there is a project called Click or Klick, this uses the same technices as CNR (linsoire or how is it called) and the installation issues on a mac. And most apps will work out off the box iff you have the most depencies covered. With Klik you just have to unpack the tar files and start the apps via the klik client, so there should be no problem using your USB stick to run an app on another compu with the klick client installed. And some apps will just work out off the untared files... Indeed some off these apps are heavely reliant (correct english???) on GTK or another engine so thats something to remember. But most apps running on GTK or java or something like that wil run on almost any set up, both kde and gnome are very supported these days.

Have fun

bfree continues: This is not the only change in klik recently however, now applications are built into compressed image (cmg) files rather then stored as application directories. This means that you can store the application on any filesystem and move it around at will. Klik no longer totally depends on kde. Where previously klik could only be used with konqueror, now you can also use firefox and elinks, and where previously kdialog was required, now any of dialog|Xdialog|kdialog should work.

linux

Which distro would be the best for a beginner? I'm thinking of trying to make a portable usb linux with apps on it. here is a link I found for putting different linux onto usb. http://pendrivelinux.com/pdlforum/
the easiest to install seems to be puppy.

Portable vs Desktop

For portable, try out puppy or damn small linux. Both work pretty well, albeit slow from a USB flash drive. For a desktop, I recommend Ubuntu. Solid, regularly updated, Debian-based. There's a LiveCD of it you can try right on their site.

LuaLauncher

I had been working on an application launcher named LuaLauncher which uses Lua scripting to make applications portable. Although it's not nearly close to completion, it could run quite easily on Windows, Mac and Linux. The reason I haven't continued development on it is that noone has responded stating their interest towards the project. If someone posts, I might take interest in starting up development on it again.
