Portable Firefox downloading vs. regular Firefox downloading

I have a problem with regular win32 Firefox where Firefox automatically downloads to the temporary directory in the background before I can choose a location to save to. The details of this are in my post in the mozillaZine forum for Firefox Support.

Topic title: Help to disable dling to temp dir before I can pick location

So I am wondering if Portable Firefox is a solution to the problem I described in that thread, and what exactly causes that issue/feature in regular Firefox.

Thanks.

All you have to do is adjust

All you have to do is adjust a setting in your hard drive Firefox's options. Go to Tools>Options>Downloads, and under the 'Download Folder' heading, check the 'Ask me where to save every file' option.

I know about that, but thank

I know about that, but thank you for replying. If you read the thread I posted a link to, you'll see what I'm talking about. I give an example of exactly what I mean: any file is downloaded to the temporary directory in the interim, before I can choose the location. During that time, the file maxes out the temporary directory on the RAM drive. I'm in Bart PE.
I'm not using any extensions that would cause it, like FasterFox or anything. It seems to be a characteristic of Firefox. I have disabled to disk cache but that doesn't help. Try the example and you'll see what I mean.

I tried Portable Firefox...

I tried Portable Firefox 1.5.0.3 and I have the same problem as I did in regular Firefox, in case anyone is wondering.

I was not aware that ff did

I was not aware that ff did that. That was a long standing problem with IE as it was hard coded just like you describe and I have no idea if they ever fixed that or not. FF's cousin, netscape never had that problem that's why I am suprised FF does. If it were me, I would try it on a clean machine to be sure it was not do to registry problems. If you can duplicate it, I would report it to moz bug site.

good luck, Fletch

I just checked out Bugzilla

I just checked out Bugzilla and it's insanity trying to find just whether or not this has been reported in FF 1.5. I found some posts from 2002 though. One metabugtrack post is here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=129923

This guy on mozillazine replied to my original support post and said I have to choose a static download location in advance to avoid the temporary directory, so I'll have to do that for now. I really think the option to prevent Firefox from downloading in the background to the temporary directory would be a great feature. If not for Firefox, for Portable Firefox.

If not

If not Firefox... then not Portable Firefox.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
