MS Word documents....open in Firefox?

I am still new to Firefox but I am loving it. Especially now I carry it with me on my flash drive. One thing I would like out of it would be able to view MS Word documents in the browser so I wont have to download and then view them on MS Word. Also it would be nice to be able to view Powerpoints on Firefox if possible. My work computer doesn't have those programs so it would be nice to just be able to view them in Firefox for simplicity.

Thanks,
Neil

You can't

No browsers have the ability to view MS Word documents internally. Internet Explorer actually opens MS Word (when installed) within itself... so it's actually downloading the DOC file to your temp directory and then launching a full copy of Word... it just appears within the browser window. You'll need to open them with something like AbiWord or OpenOffice.org.

What's the point?

It doesn't actually save you anything when Word does it in IE, it's still opening up a whole program.

There is an OpenOffice plugin for IE (and maybe FF) but I don't think they'll work portably. And there's really no need for it... since that would also actually fire up the whole program anyway.

It doesn't actually save you any time to open it up in-browser vs opening the program. The file is downloaded to your temp directory in either scenario. The program that shows it is launched in either scenario.

PDFs work the same way (whether you use the in-browser plugin or launch Adobe Reader).

Still save local

You'd then have to save it locally, open AJAXwrite, and then import it into AJAXwrite to view it. And that's what he's apparently trying to avoid.
