Tutorial to Editing Current Apps

Hi,

I was just wondering if there is a tutorial (for semi newbs) on how to edit the code of a portable app. Basically I want to edit a program to write an output to a text file, just as a way to get started with this (so cool). Any help is greatly appreciated
