I was wondering if the guys at Mozilla are working on making FF lighter and faster like Chrome? Because if Chrome was open source and portable I'd switch to it in an instant... it's just so light. So I was wondering if Firefox will move into the same direction to keep up... I didn't ask there cause I just don't know what they're reaction would be to this...
Chrome /is/ open-source. And there are a ton of Chromium/Iron launchers here already. I'm using portable Chromium right now, actually.
Yes Mozilla is working on Version 3.1 (which the portable version should be in the beta testing forums) and no Chrome is not completely Open Source. It has several Closed Source parts (EVIL GOOGLE)

Get Chromium or Iron if you don't want the closed source stuff in there. The browser itself is open-source.
Also, might I point out that FF included a closed-source component (the crash reporter) before FF3.
Could you please enlighten me what is the difference between the two? And also - if they are opensource why aren't there any portable launchers here?
start for example here:

then use search you will find different threads abt it.
The browser might be OK one day, at present it is just half of everything, but many portable version around.

Get the portable Iron directly from SRWare. It works flawlessly and saves everything to the app's folder. It also integrates well into the PAM. I use it as my default browser. Get it here:
http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_download.php
Make sure you get the portable version if you want to run it with your PortableApps.com Menu. I've been thinking about it lately, and I don't understand why people continue to create different versions of this in the Beta Testing and Portable App Development forums when there's this one that's already done.
...if it had a better name. Petty, I know, but Iron is a stupid name for browser (or any software, for that matter). At least Chrome/Chromium sounds cool!
Besides, I'm less apt to trust third-party stuff. Even with open-source, I'd rather use an official build when possible, even if said company is evil. Google is less evil than Microsoft, at least (for now)!
I actually think Iron is a creative name. Chrome/Chromium is a metal, Iron is a stronger/sturdier metal, and with the phone-home stuff removed in Iron, it makes it a browser with stronger security

Umm, can't you turn off the phone-home stuff anyway? Seriously, people are too paranoid... the source is readily available (after all, Chromium has it too), so if you want to see what it's sending to Google, just look at the source!
Just look at the source! You're funny. Ever analyzed 1.4 GB of text?
And these are Chromium sources, Chrome is different and only google knows where.

Tell me what's different between Chrome and Chromium as concerns the spyware behavior. If you're suggesting Chrome has it and Chromium doesn't, then why does Iron even exist?
And 1.4 GB is a ridiculous amount of code for a browser as simple as Chrome. I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of that is dependencies.
I'm suggesting that Chrome *might* have some secret parts that are not in Chrome.
Yes, I'm paranoid.
I took a deeper look.
3rd party tools take 476 MB.
But there are also .svn files, hard to measure exactly. OK, it for sure
