TestDisk is an open source disk recovery application, very useful.

use the live disc :D No need

use the live disc Biggrin

No need for it to be portable then, as the OS is self contained. Inside of a virtual machine, I think it would be useless.

TestDisk is portable

in fact, it is only a command line utility, different versions for diferrent operating systems.
It works stright from the stick, it can be started also in dosbox directly.
No need for any launchers.

But yes, it is better to run it from outside the just running system, so this is why they have an iso of a bootdisk for it.
Many live linux distros have it anyway 'on board', as well as many B-PE systems.

Yeah it's already portable

Yeah it's already portable really, so it'd be nice to see it bundled onto the site.

I use it from windows to recover data from HDDs via USB.

as it is command line app

and is a simple exe, there is not much to bundle in fact.
There is no launcher needed or anything similar. Just place the exe in a subfolder of poartbale apps as any other app and it will show up in the menu where you can run it from then.
A launcher will not help here with anything, an installer is also not needed for simple exe.

But as stated, the operation of this is anyway much more sensible done when run from bootmedia. So better download one of the bootmedia files they offer on their site and run it from there.

i actually just used this app

i actually just used this app and it works very well, windows 7, i now need to know.. when it prompts you where to save your files it gives you options for pretty much where the app is running from so if it's running from a usb drive it'll save to that directory? i mean if it gives an option to browse for a dir on a local drive i missed it? if so could someone explain how to save to somewhere other than the usb drive you're running it from?

and if there's a file-type specific program like Testdisk, pleas point me to it. the ability to save one file-type or individual directories would be great.

i don't know what did it but on my pc that recently died i finally got an ide/sata to usb adapter and on a secondary drive i has installed somehow it turned it into a dynamic drive and would like to save various files but mainly pictures, Testdisk works but i can't choose images only and at the moment hard drive space is limited.

off topic but related.. i had almost 20 hdd's laying around and i had been testing them with the internals of a external hard drive i ripped apart and none installed properly they all gave a "code 10" so i was about to rip them all apart to play with the sweet magnets inside haha but thought to try the adapter so i did and every single drive worked perfect so i highly suggest picking one up for testing hdd's. the pictures i was able to save from what i thought where lost forever was worth so much more than the adapter cost in dollars.

of all the things i've lost, i miss my mind the most.
