Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is there anywhere on this site or forum that commercial PortableApps.com-compatible apps can be listed? I have noted the stern warnings about spamming, but it strikes me that folks might be interested in knowing about other apps they can use with PortableApps.com.
I ask because I'm the author of a commercial app for writers and a customer recently asked me about PortableApps.com support, so I implemented it. It was relatively easy because I already had a USB-drive-mode and my app comes in Windows, Linux, and Mac flavours - all can be installed on the same external drive, sharing settings and data. However, my chosen file layout was originally unique to this app, partly because it took into account multiple platforms.
Perhaps there could be a forum for mentioning commercial apps? After all I guess it's in everyone's interests for as many companies to support this mode of operation as possible, given the hassles of trying to force an unwilling app to be USB-drive-friendly. So if a few companies starting doing it, maybe it would persuade others (especially competitors) to follow suit.
Thanks for listening!
Julian
You might like to read John Haller's latest status update. He covers commercial software. Looks as though you might possibly get to be an early taker!

Wow! Very intriguing indeed - looking forward to tracking further developments. Thanks for the pointer. When I have a blog up and running I'll add an item about building in support for PortableApps.com, from the perspective of an app that uses the wxWidgets toolkit.
I wonder how USB drive manufacturers might support use of software on the drive, apart from endorsing a particular standard? I guess they'll want to take multiple platforms into account too.

would be very interested in reading it, my app on this site, Toucan, is written in the wxWidgets toolkit. It doesnt do too badly for itself (~425,000 downloads) and I am currently in the process of getting it to work under Linux, so if you could drop a note here when you have that would be great.
Thanks
Interesting to hear about Toucan - I'll definitely drop a note here when I have something written down. Will check out Toucan; my users will no doubt be interested to know about this since syncing writing between machines is often an issue.
Also nice to see wxWidgets being used... in 2012, the project will be 20 years old. Cor.
it is amusing to think I am only a couple of years older than the toolkit I am writing in![Wink](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/wink.gif)
Hi,
I've written my blog entry on coding adaptations for PortableApps.com, here:

Do say if it's too thin on some details.

There will be an entire directory of commercial apps in PortableApps.com Format right here on the site once we launch the ability for them to use the format and installer in the next couple weeks.

John I am so looking forward to all the new apps! (Chomping at the bit!)
While I have been to other sites that provide lots of "portable apps" I love that this site is so well documented and your definition of portable is not leaving ANYTHING behind on the pc. (you don't always know what you will get with other sites)
I use mostly OSS and while the selection here is more limited then other sites, The stability and fact I don't have to add the program to a vm or do a local install in order to get my app more than makes up for it. Most every app I use (with minor exceptions) come from you guys.
My question is this, will the new commercial apps be held to this same high standard of testing and production or will it be more of a place for vendors to provide apps to be hosted here, they have made and maintain in PAF (meaning they may not be um as tested?) ?
Only apps in PortableApps.com Format will be listed and these apps must follow the PortableApps.com Spec to be able to use our code and trademarks. Apps that do not follow the spec (leaving behind registry keys, local files, not storing data properly, etc) will be warned to fix their issues and de-listed if they do not follow the guidelines properly. We'll also have available a testing tool that checks for registry and local file system changes to do quick checks on whether an app leaves anything behind.
