Hi All,
I have a peculiar behaviour going on when installing the portable apps.
I normally use Firefox, Sundird, Sumatra PDF, CalmWin, 7Zip, AbiWord, VLC and a few other apps.
When I install all of them to a single folder
F:\Portable Apps
They share the common folders APP, Data and Others. There was no issue with the previous installations, they all shared the resources properly.
But when I took all the latest apps from the site today and tried to install all the software to the same common folder (deleted previous installs folder). Each application seems to be deleting the files of the other application.
ex: I installed sumatra PDF and then firefox. Firefox seems to delete the sumatra files.
The same thing happens with sunbird, sumatra pdf, firefox, abiword and others.
Is this some strange behaviour?? can some one explain me how these things seem to delete others files.
1) 1GB thumb drive (i have been using portable apps on it for quite a long time)
2) Previous installations never had this kind of behaviour.
Thanks for any help to resolve it... till then I am back to my backup.
regards,
praneeth.
Each app expects to be in its own directory. So, you'd have:
X:\PortableApps\
X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable
X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\App
X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data
X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Other
X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable
X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\App
X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\Data
X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\Other
Trying to install them all to the same folder is just like trying to install a bunch of different local software all to the same directory. It won't work and will break just about everything. How it worked before is down to just sheer luck (unless you're using the very, very old beta of the suite from my personal site which did do it this way maybe 3ish years ago and have not updated the apps since then). If that's the case, then you can pull the data pieces individually. Though it doesn't sound like that's the case as you're using apps that didn't exist back then. You'll need to manually try and pull the different app settings apart, there's no easy way to do it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
