DISCONTINUED: Spicebird Portable 0.7 Development Test 1

[Spicebird has been abandoned by its publisher. The last release has known security issues and should no longer be used. Use Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition from the Portable App Directory instead.]

Description: Spicebird is a combination email client, personal information manager, instant messenger, RSS reader and more. It's based on Thunderbird and lightning and uses the Telepathy IM framework. It also supports iGoogle Gadgets on the homepage.

Release Status

Since it was asked in IRC, I wanted to mention here, too, that we probably will wait for the 1.0 release before doing our official stable release of this to the general public. 0.7 is still a beta and encouraging end users to use a beta email client may not be the best idea. It's more-easily justified when we do betas of our already supported big apps like Firefox and Thunderbird since we add big warnings and encourage regular users to use the current stable release (something we can't do in this case). I'm open to other opinions, though.

i don't know the specific Spicebird, but it a\has come to my attention that some Open Source apps are on a 0.x for like 6+ years. While the software itself is stable and functional the release of an 1.0 version is pushed back due to a design goal not yet met or even because it lacks a 101% complete manual. That said, I guess Spicebird itself has flagged the releases as unstable beta's or something, I don't know. I just know some projects will be in Beta for a long, long time to come...

Beta

Spicebird is definitely considered a beta. Some open source projects will be pre-1.0 for a long time. And that's fine for stuff like media players, games and some utilities. But us recommending normal end users use a beta email client for normal use is an exceedingly bad idea. Spicebird intends to go 1.0 with the next release. If they didn't and intended to stay "Beta" for a long time, we wouldn't be considering them for inclusion.

Spicebird is being developed

Spicebird is being developed with a commercial interest and is not another hobbyist project.Development on spicebird is going at full swing and we should be able to reach 1.0 by the first quarter of 2009, tentatively.We will also be having minor updates now and then.

Bug

I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything, but I think the launcher leaves behind a folder.

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Spicebird

Hopefully it's something I messed with, but I didn't touch any of the launcher code.

On another note, I cannot get Spicebird to connect to my chat clients (GTalk and AIM), any ideas?

Did you test 0.4 cause that may be left there from then, if he did fix the bug. Weird too, because I believe Thunderbird had this problem and was fixed, and he said he updated to the latest Thunderbird code.

That's what I thought initially, so I deleted that folder manually and ran Spicebird again. And yet again the folder was not deleted.

I can confirm the folder bug

I can confirm the folder bug mentioned above on WinXP SP2.

Created upon launch but not cleaned up on exit are:

%APPDATA%\Spicebird\Crash Reports\InstallTimeYYYYMMDDHHMM
%APPDATA%\Spicebird\Crash Reports\UserID

Wrong thread, but Songbird creates the same files\folders and deletes ..\CrashReports\ on down, but leaves the %APPDATA%\Songbird2 folder behind. Songbird's launcher has code to check for the existence of CrashReports and deletes the folder (albeit a flawed routine as noted earlier)

I noted the same bug in Songbird here, but it's not fixed yet.

Alpha Code

Yeah, the launcher is the current Thunderbird 2 client. But Spicebird is based on Thunderbird Pre-Alpha or Alpha 3, I believe, so it has the crash reports from the new Gecko engine. I may do another dev test before the next Spicebird release but may not since no one should actually be using this app beyond testing right now.

Testing ...1 2 3?

I'm running on Spicebird .7; that said, I do back up regularly. However, how can you truly test without actually using Spicebird?

I'm finding it very crash prone but still a good PIM. That said, I'm slowly going away from the calendar functions anyway... so I'll probably be back to Thunderbird when I'm sick of it crashing.
