Screwed up flash drive from standard suite installation (possibly?)

I got a 1Gb drive free from uni, and thought I’d install the standard suite, having only used custom installs before on smaller capacity drives. The drive was pre-formatted, and the install went fine, and all seemed to be working until I tried to use it on another computer. Then the autoplay in XP took forever, and it wouldn’t load, allow me into any folders as everything resulted in a computer slow down. I remembered reading that the standard suite worked well on 2 Gig drives, so I formatted my drive, yet now can’t use it at all and can’t even format it again. Does anyone reckon I’ve got a duff drive (even though it’s a few months old) or that the installation messed something up?

sitck defect

stick is defective quite sure, but this is in general not possible to be done by just formating or writing anything to it.
It looks like the controller is still alive, but the memory chips not any more. Have full box of those gadgets at home which do behave very similar.

Just a rubbish batch (or something?)

That’s quite disappointing, as I’ve got a 128mb drive that I was also given (but from college) which’s of the same brand and that’s still going strong. I’m just glad I didn’t loose anything.

I have many

that dont work.
Got some from a IT company as advertising gift, most of them claimed to be 1G, but could take only 6kb, I assume this was some spare storage inside the controller or what, have no idea.

Then had nice 16G sticks , in kind of leather packed case, nice shiny cover etc. They did work only few times and turned out to have only 4G inside, thought the controller tells me still there are 16G in it.

No, Brunel (university).

I had also been using it as a backup, for a couple of months, but I pulled all of my files off once it had started to behave peculiarly. It’s my first such experience with flash media, which until now, I had found for years to be very reliable. It would be better if they didn't bother giving out sub-standard products, if they’re going to fail, causing more harm than good in the long run.

PS: Sorry for delay in responding (this is the first day I’ve had off since my last post)

I spoke too soon

The 128mb drive also failed, although I did drop it twice, once in the rain. I’m not getting anything from it when I plug it in, so the controller must be gone, although I was thinking of soldering the USB interface from the faulty 1GB drive on to see if that makes any difference (although I’m not sure if it will).
