Is there such a thing as portable Ubuntu?

I searched the net but didn't find anything in particular... Excuse me for my ignorance if that's a really dumb and obvious (for some) question.

WOW. That's a lot of stuff in there.

If you allow me let me re-word my post... I haven't touched any Linux/Unix platform before and I really want to start toying around with some to get into it I just don't want to install anything for now - just toy around with a Linux platform and slowly learn. So what would you recommend me - for a beginner, without installation, etc.?

Depends...

If you're looking for size, Damn Small Linux is the way to go. For ease and usability (have you the space), try to boot Ubuntu using the instruction provided above. Fedora also released their latest version and they've had a bootable utility since the last version. But again, Fedora is even larger than Ubuntu AFAIK.
