issues with multiple instaces of Firefox Portable

so here is my issue:

after following the instructions on this link: http://lifehacker.com/5062410/customize-your-own-portable-firefox-six-pack i've made possible for my 3 installations of firefox portable to run at the same time and set one of the as my default browser... and when i open a link from an email within thunderbird it opens my default firefox portable version but if i want to open another link from thunderbird or another application it gives me the following popup: "Firefox is allready running, but is not respondig. To open a new window, you must first open the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."

my idea is to open the second link in the same firefox portable window but in a new tab... and obviously not show that popup...
is there a way to fix this???

thanks in advance!

Unsupported

Firefox has issues with running multiple instances and attempting to open associated links. This is an issue with Firefox itself as Firefox is not meant to run multiple different instances at the same time. We use a slightly-unofficial (documented at mozillaZine but not within Firefox help files) to allow Firefox to run multiple instances. It's not generally recommended and will leave files behind when used portably as indicated in our help files since our portable launcher can't tell when its internal copy of firefox really closes.

thanks for the reply...

thanks for the reply... 'glad' to see this is an issue with Firefox itself... hope they fix this soon... even though i'm experimenting with the new 3.1 beta1 release and i'm having the same problem.

Probably Not / Possible Workaround

Firefox, like most browsers, is really meant to be used in a single instance. I don't think they plan on further enhancing the multi-instance abilities at all.

You *may* be able to get it working by selecting a single instance of Firefox Portable as your default and manually associating http, html, etc in your file assocations with the appropriate FirefoxPortable.exe (instead of firefox.exe like usual) to get around the issue. Since our launcher is setting the environment variable first, Firefox may not complain about it. Give it a shot and post back if it works for you.

Pick One

you need to pick one as the default and manually set it. you should be able to run multiple FFPs as long as all are set to allow multiple. admittedly, I haven't tried secondary launches with multiple instances so it may just now work.
