Wine for windows

So here is my thought....

They do Wine for windows and basically you can install applications into it. But if we could make wine portable then we could install apps into it and have even more portable apps!

Actually...

The WINE binaries for Windows just replace the Windows' dlls with WINE's ones. They have that to test if WINE's dlls are doing what they are supposed to. So they are not even close to what the Linux WINE binaries do.

I actually had this idea once and posted it here. And there are actually attempts (unfortunatelly not OSS nor free) to make that happen, like the previously named Thinstall that now has a new name that is not OSS and costs A LOT.

So, unfortunately, until an OpenSource and free alternative to Thinstall is made, it is not possible to make your idea come true.

...

You know, for the life of me, I still don't understand how Thinstall works.

Wine is a compatibility layer

Wine is a compatibility layer for linux to run Windows Programs, it is by no means a suitible replacement for windows nor a way to make apps portable. End of story

But there is a windows version... And if that was portable then you could install apps into it, that was just my thought

I realize your intentions.

I realize your intentions. I'm just telling you it would still use the windows Registry. hence really no point in using the wine lib Wink

I've just had the most

I've just had the most wonderful thought though. What if the entire dev community of Portable apps all got together, some kinda conference (Or IRC chat :p) And developed some open source software that would allow anyone to make our own portable apps of whatever we want...? Kinda like thinstall, just free...

Cool.

Well I'm signing off now anyway, but seriously why can the whole community get together for one big dev project?

Great Idea!

Let's call it Virtual Box, or maybe Vmware or even Virtual PC. Unfortunately, it's difficult to make them portable, since they interact with the OS so tightly. Google "mojopac" or "pocket ace vmware" for examples.

as the others like Virtual PC

as the others like Virtual PC and VirtualBox uses system drivers anyways we maybe getting virtualbox portable soon as I am recompiling the Open Source Edition (with the exclusion of the drivers) so that we have a fully Open-Source compiled binary of VirtualBox to be made in the PortableApps.com Format

QEMU

QEMU is a pure software emulator. The others use virtualization (directly using the host's hardware to emulate the guest machine), which generally requires drivers since the virtualizer has to interact directly with the hardware.

ah u think hardware will work

ah

u think hardware will work on any pc out of the box in the vm?
think for

ide sata drives
usb
lan
sound

then i could finally use truecrypt and other software which requires admin rights everywhere, but i dont think u can set up a vm that easyly and portable, but let me be surprised Smile
