You can get the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack from the Microsoft website but in my case, I don't want to have to install it and I couldn't even if i wanted to.
Can anyone help?

The compatibility pack is not portable or at least no more than the Office programs themselves, sorry

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
If I remind correctly, the Compatibility Pack is an Office 2003 addon which allow conversion of the new Office 2007 format. If you want to open them in OpenOffice, it already support Office-based document. I'm not sure for 2007 documents though.
OpenOffice 3.0 supports DOCX, the Office 2007 format (not perfectly, though)
