Instead of bundling apps into the suite.....

Everyone knows our suites contain multiple applications that can be a pain in the rear to constantly keep updating and people wine when it's not done. Now I know a few people have gotten around the whole not being aloud to distribute apps in there launchers so they have the launchers download the app automatically and put it in the right place. My thought is why not save some time and effort and instead of bundling things in the suite why not just download something like that? Just download a launcher and you can check checkbox typa-things to select what apps you want. People talked a while ago about more specialized suites and this could let you do that without having to update anything have a drop down arrow to select what kinda suite you wanna install. Now if this was done instead of having to continually update several suites you ownly have to update one launcher when a new app is released from the beta forum. Does this seem far fetched or a possible reality?

This sounds like a good idea.

This sounds like a good idea. It would be like the way the updater works, people could just download a program and then run that program to select which programs they would like to download. Maybe somebody could write something up.

Let It Go

Seriously, let it go. Complaining about it over and over and over just makes us never want to do anything for anyone ever again. Ever.

DROP IT

Please this was supposed to be a post that was actually helpful in giving John a little less stress and an easier way to do things.

Plan

This is the eventual plan, but the updater isn't there yet. We're also going to work on getting the installers to install without user intervention in such a case.

User intervention?

Well I kinda like that you can download them individually that would be great for people that just can't get the internet access so they just have a friend get them the installler and they can do what they will with that. Although I could see it being nice to maybe have the updater allow for command line usage. If none are present do it the normal way. If some are present though use the settings from the updater.

Example: {PATH}\PortableFireFoxInstaller.exe $INSTALLPATH $WHATEVERELSE

What do you think?

NSIS built-in

It's built into NSIS:
C:\path\to\installer.exe -o "C:\outpath"

The only problem is that we don't fully support it, due to the way the installer is set up, plus other bits and pieces.

I like it, also even if these

I like it, also even if these are apps already published as a PortableApp installer. (as discussed in another very recent post). In essence this could be done by the PortableApps.com updater and the menu, but the updater would be adapted. I would also support the function of an alternate local location (ie a folder in PortableApps that could contain installers of different apps) to facilitate the distribution on static media (CD-ROM for example).

99% of the functionality is already present in the Menu and Updater so realizing something like this could be done I guess and hope. Also, if you think about it, the future launcher will be reading the info from an ini, so in essence the launcher info could be collected into one big ini file or database to one launcher executable and various launcher parameters inside the database ini.

But to realize something like this we completely depend on John.

At the moment I work on Beta2 of the updater ...

... it will be more 'synaptic' like.
*Support for different repositories
*Categories for the Apps like on the webpage
*Remove installed Apps (with the option of save the Data directories

But we should keep the present solution (use the standard installers). If You dont want to see the single installers You are able to hide them.

Don't go getting too far ahead

Those of us on slow dial-up can't handle HUGE downloads. (Downthemall is my best friend), but if a file is over 100 or 150 mb. I skip it and go on. I can handle the medium sized downloads, but the Linux size iso files are not available for me. What your suggesting is okay, but keep the apps themselves, available for us to download, the way are now, on the download page. Otherwise, I'm left out in the cold. I gave up trying to download Ubuntu with Wubi this way, when it first came out.

That's not quite how it would work....

The idea is not to download ANY app inside of the suite. The idea would be the suite would only be like a 1mb because it doesn't have any apps in it. You would select which apps to download from the suite's list and then it does it and installs for you. And it seems like the normal app page would be left in place for people that install on many computers and don't want to constantly download the app over and over again.

1 or 2 apps

wouldn't be a problem, but if I tried to add like Oo.o portable, Gnucash portable, and Stellarium, that's approx. 160 mb. +/-. My portableapps folder is about 2.24 gb. (including plug-ins, add-ons, unofficial apps etc.) and it's taken about two years to get to that size. If a pause option like in downthemall is added, maybe this wouldn't be a problem. But I can't just go away and let my computer run for days, trying to download alot of apps at once. The recent Oo.o update for example, I have been downloading it for two days now. It'll probably be updated again before I finish downloading the original version. I live in a rural area, so high speed internet isn't an option for me.

I had a similar idea here.

I had a similar idea here. You could just download the new installer and use it for updating.

I don't have a short attention span. I just...oh look a kitty!
