I was running my Windows 98 Pentium II machine (trust me, it wasn't ready to edit video as well as I'd like) and needed an upgrade to a Vista box. I use WinXP on a very regular basis with no problems whatsoever, but Vista was the huge downer that everyone said it would be.
Fortunately, I discovered PortableApps at about the same time. I won't have to mess with the registry! I can just zip up my favorite apps, back them up on disk or flash, and not have to install them one-by-one when moving around! This site and the capabilities it provides truly brightened my day! The price was the selling point that got me started, but the quality is spectacular. Combining it with a viewing of 3 of the live-action Zero Wing parodies and I can feel good to be alive, even with Vista.
Most open source places seem to hit non-technical readers like a fire hose with choices and try to change their religion (to Linux of course ) but this site just says “here's a whole bunch of the best free software and it works exactly like you'd want it to.”
Sometimes the anonymity of the Internet makes people less talkative, so I really want to make a point of appreciating everyone involved in the Portable Apps web page, programming, and its general existence. Thank you!
