It's the same issue as intl.dll not being found. Something on your PC is messing with GTK. Try the experimental build:

I have downloaded and installed the experimental version to my thumbdrive, and are still getting the same message. Is the program looking for files that are not on the thumbdrive?

Do you happen to know if there are any GTK remnants on the PC you're having trouble with? Portable GIMP will work out of the box on a virgin install of Win98/Me/2000/XP (I know, I've tested them all) so it's something else on your PC that's conflicting with it.

I just started to have this same problem on a relatively new Win2K system install. Installed Win2k, AVG antivirus, Zone alarm,Norton Ghost 2003, Blood Dev C++, Acrobat Reader 5.0.
Portable Apps in a directory on a second partition of the hard drive. Gimp worked fine. Some days later, I installed Hauppage WinTV and I have just noticed that Portable Gimp no longer works.
I loaded the "experimental" version and that helped, but it began complaining about not finding .dll's in ../PortableGIMP/gimp/lib/2.0/plug-ins. I finally got the .dll's into that directory and now Gimp loads if I ignore the two messages that are known for the "experimental" version.
It appears that something has messed up the Path variable. It may be the Hauppage software, but since others are seeing the problem, I suspect a problem with setting the "path" variable as the program loads. Could it be that the "path" is exceeding some limit and being truncated? I remember seeing this problem years ago and since it is an artifact from DOS, I expect nothing has been done to increase it. Anybody have any thoughts?
I'm going to uninstall Hauppage and see if that fixes it. I have a "image backup" that I made when GIMP was working and if all else fails I will restore the system to that state.
Is there anything that you would like me to try before I do that?

Sounds like the WinTV installer put an incompatible version of GTK on your machine which is going to cause problems. Even if you uninstall it, GTK is notorious for not completely uninstalling, hence causing problems with the portable GTK applications like GIMP and Gaim.

Nope, WinTV doesn't use GTK! Commercial program for Windows.
I did a search and ohly found GTK associated with the Portable Apps. The same APPS work fine from a stick on other machines. I suspect the problem is as I stated, "path variable" getting corrupted. Could be caused by WinTV. I'll investigate further and report back.

Restored the disk image, still have the problem.
Since John says Portable Gimp works fine from a clean install, I'll try that next. Then slowly rebuild the system. Fortunately this is a non-critical system and I can blow it away and rebuild it. I still think the problem is within either Gimp or the code to make it portable. It appears that somehow the "path" variable is getting set incorrectly.
I'll rebuild my system and add things slowly to see if I can narrow down the interactions. Any suggestions are appreciated.

It appears that Ghost 2003 is some how interfering. I started rebuilding the system from scratch and when I installed Ghost the problem came back. Uninstalling Ghost allowed Portable Gimp to start correctly.
Looks like I can't install Ghost. Will have to run from CD when I do backups. Guess thats OK, but would sure like to understand what is happening better. I am reasonably sure that Ghost does not use GTK, so there must be another mechanism.

In desperation took Clair's advice and uninstalled Ghost 2003 and now Portable Gimp works!!!
Still a problem though - portability requires ability to run from USB thumb drive WITHOUT uninstalling other software. One cannot uninstall Ghost on everybody else's computer.
It's a known issue and there's nothing John can do about it since it's a GTK issue. GTK isn't the best-written piece of software in the world.

I tried copied everything in gtk\bin over to gimp\bin. Got beyond the .dll not found problem but get the following error message: PANGO-ERROR **: file shape.c line 75 (pangle_shape); assertion failed
I have gotten this error message as well on several different machines, has anyone figured out exactly what causes it?
I got error after error trying to get this thing to work. What I ended up doing to get it working was copy all the dll files from gtk/bin and gimp/bin to the main folder where the gimp exe is located. Now everything seems to be working fine. Also something I noticed when I first started getting missing .dll errors the ones I downloaded from the net didnt work right. Only the dlls already in the package worked with it.
Hi, I've been following this thread. And here are my observations.
When running the software from my USB Drive using a works machine (WinXP SP2, German Build) the application does run and appears quite stable. (2.2.11B) English Download.
When running the software on my home PC, WinXP SP 2 English build I get the same errors libglib-2.0-0 dll not registered. Following the forum and copying the DLL's to the same directory as the gimp, I get another error reported.
Pange-Error **: file shape.c: line 75 (pango_shape): assertion failed: (glyphs->num_glyphs > 0) aborting...
Any suggestions?

Hi John,
Thank you for a very quick response. I have tried your pre-release on the machine that I had experienced the problems and success. I've tried the wifes machine which did work with the previous version. Also Success, plus two laptops. My development machine did show the conflicting XMLPARSE.DLL/XMLTOK.DLL message.
