Do I just copy the downloaded EXE file and replace the old one (eg. the actual skype's exe not the launcher's exe)?

Or should I download the new one, install it and THEN copy the exe file?
Can some one enlighten me?
EDIT:
Just tried it - doesn't work that way.
I had a portable launcher for Skype 3 I believe and then I installed Skype 4 beta. Then I copied the exe file from 4. I uninstalled 4. Then I replaced the exe file of 3 with the one from 4.
The history and contacts seem to all be there, but the profile settings aren't the same I had in 3... so I guess it didn't extract the information from my profile folder quite correctly...
Any ideas as to what to do?
EDIT2: So I guess nobody has used the portable launcher with the new beta version?
the luancher uses a portable switch. so long as the switch is still in the beta, just copy skype.exe But I'm not using the beta.
