New "Applications" not showing in FFP

New applications are not being added to options/applications - is that a general bug or something which might be related to the portable version?

What a PA menu?

PA menu? What's that?

This is the Firefox forum - therefore I'm talking about Firefox - specifically the menu Tool/Options/Applications

And there is no "refresh menu" in firefox that I can see.

Application or Content Type?

In case, you don't mistake a "Content Type" for a "Helper Application", all you need to do is to click on the "type" of your interest, open the drop down menu, and select "Use other...". This will open the "Select Helper Application" panel... If the application you'd like to use is not already in the menu, you'll, obviously, need to point to its location.

Its the programming zealots again

Well if "all i needed to do" was that, there wouldn't be a problem. But as i said nothing appears there, and the "always do this option" is always disabled.

Well, what I really want is if i click "open" on a file that the browser just send it on to the OS which will then determine what to launch - it shouldn't be the browsers business. Or, in some cases, i just want to be able to permanently save files of a certain type.

I was told that for some arcane reason the files have to appear under applications. But it seems totally stupid to me that you have to have a "helper application" to always be able to save a download (i say "always", because the "always do this" is disabled, and people have said that is because there isn't a type in applications).

However, I realized that firefox apparently can't do this because of some religious design reasons, so i ended up manually editing the mimetype.rdf file to add some fake types there. Annoying that I should have to, but such is life apparently.

It's the missing details

@Kermode: "But as i said nothing appears there, and the 'always do this option' is always disabled."

Well, if you had "said" the above, then you should also share this detail (and others) in writing, in your post. There's a significant difference between stating that new applications are not appearing and nothing at all.

Anyway, personally, I've never had such a problem with FF, so, I'll leave to others to help with it. Nonetheless, I've made a fresh install of FF-3.0.5 just to check the Tools > Options > "Applications" list..., and found 18 entries there for the "Content Type" created automatically. All working fine.

Well since that is not the case, I didn't write that:

"nothing appears there ...[beyond what is already there]" - ie, no new applications are appearing, as i wrote.

Though when I tried removing the mime file Firefox did NOT populate the list, then it was just a default list of 3 items, and nothing new appeared. So perhaps it updated the list once, but has stopped doing so, if this is a portable bug or a FF bug or just "working as intended" i don't know.

(Though perhaps I should download and try a portable install in a different location and see what happens)

But then put the old (fuller) mime file back with the edits i had made and the new application was there for (most of) my needs.

Of course it still annoys me I can't save + name file + open it in one go, but perhaps someone'll make a plugin one day.
