Unable to start any of the installed contact list plugins. I even ignored your preferences, for which contact list couldn't load any.
Gee someone's upset about their portable app not being portable. I suppose "helpful" actually means "deceptive".
Helpful means exactly what it says... one that says what the issue is... as explained in the forum guidelines. I modified it in the hopes that someone is more likely to help you. It's explained in the guidelines:
"Use a Relevant Subject - You'll be far more likely to get a response and get the appropriate people to read your post if you use an appropriate subject. Subjects like "problem", "error" or "need help" don't help others help you. If you have a problem, what is it? How can you summarize it? "Error in acme.dll on startup" would be a much more useful subject, for instance."
Do you actually want help with your issue or are you more interested in being a wise-ass and trolling?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
But you're doing two things, neither of which are helpful.
1. You're inaccurately depicting my problem.
2. You're hiding a serious flaw in your product.
And now, you're trying to intimidate me (again) into pretending I and 2 are ok.
How about you change it back to what it was, delete everything after the first post and go away and let someone who's actually interested in helping help me instead of exercising your cyber muscle over your little fiefdom.
I didn't "move drives". I went to a new computer effectively. If i had put this on a usb and moved it it would have failed. That means its not portable. Your topic destroys my question, and since you destroyed it how about you answer it.
Then type that in the subject title. Saying "X Portable is not really portable" doesn't help someone assist you. I updated it to mean what it says. But there are a number of factors that could affect it. For starters, is the contacts plugin an add-on? If so, it may simply not be portable even though the base Miranda IM Portable is. Some Firefox add-ons have the same issue (though much fewer these days).
Personally, I don't use Miranda, I use Pidgin, so I don't know enough offhand to assist.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
God man GO AWAY if you can't help! If Miranda plus plugins is not portable then Miranda portable is not portable!
Firefox doesn't behave that way firefox plugins plug into firefox.
Just never mind I'll go get install normal miranda since you've got a total ignorant definition of "portable".
John, you know I've never once seen you actually be helpful to anyone, but I've sure seen a lot of condescension and scolding and power tripping.
I'm sure eventually you'll just lock the thread after getting your childish last word in, if you don't kick me outright.
As for me, I'm leaving, enjoy your club house.
Innomen, I changed your subject to make it easier for other developers who may have had experience with your specific issue to be able to recognize it and be able to assist. I originally modified it to say moving drives which made sense as you'd said "I migrated Miranda portable to a new install" which to me meant new drive. When you clarified and said you just moved the drive from one PC to another, I modified it again to say the same. Saying "Miranda IM Portable Isn't Really Portable" is not an accurate description, (b) not likely to make someone want to read it and (c) not likely to hit someone who may have experience with the Contacts Plugin to say from skimming the title in Recent Posts "hey, I know how to fix that". That's why your title was changed.
Miranda IM is complicated by the fact that a huge chunk of functionality is contained within hundreds and hundreds of plugins by hundreds of different developers written in different styles and storing their data in different ways. Many plugins work out of the box with Miranda IM Portable. Some may not. When we discover one that does not, we can analyze it and see how it does store its data. If it is storing its data improperly, we can report back to the plugin developer. If it is storing it correctly and we're missing it, we figure out how and update the launcher to correct it in the next release. We recently did this with Pidgin and custom buddy pounce sounds (nobody'd tried it earlier, so we didn't know it wasn't working).
Now, if you could please take a breath and tell us exactly which plugin you're using (is it Modern Contact List (Unicode) 0.7.100.35?), what directory you have Miranda IM installed to and whether the whole directory is changing or just the drive letter (some apps only work with drive letter changes no path changes), what operating system you're using (to determine Ansi vs Unicode, etc) and what you're setting and what is lost, perhaps we can assist you further.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Firstly, I'm amazed that you got so angry at someone who was actually only being helpful, but, in spite of that, I'm still willing to help if I can.
Secondly, you still haven't told us what you did, to cause the problem.
You "migrated to a new install". Sorry, but what the heck does that mean? You used to use MirandaPortable, and you fresh-installed a new copy of MirandaPortable in a different place, then carefully copied your profile and plugins into place in the new tree?
Or.... you used to use Miranda, you've now installed MirandaPortable, and copied nothing but your database file?
Or... you installed MirandaPortable somewhere, then copied various parts of your old install over the top?
I can tell you that Miranda Portable does work portably, as do most (if not all) plugins. I use it here synced between three drives, portably across 4 computers regularly, and it is fine.
If I had to guess, I'd say that you were trying to run ansi plugins on a unicode Miranda (or vice versa), or plugins from 7 against a test release of 8, maybe.
As for where it installs things, well, wherever you told it to at install time. The default is :\PortableApps\MirandaPortable
and in that folder, there will be App\miranda and App\miranda_ansi for the two versions. Choose the appropriate one of them (most likely the first for the unicode one), and there is a Plugins folder in there, in to which you should drop the plugins you want to use.
Your db file would live in :\PortableApps\MirandaPortable\Data\Profiles\.
You should always run it using :\PortableApps\MirandaPortable\MirandaPortable.exe
Now, if you can tell me what version you used to run, what version you have just installed, and what exactly you did to migrate your settings over, I'll see if I can help further.
I'm angry because I had words forcibly inserted into my mouth. Which happens a lot here if you say something that isn't all sunshine and sparkles about the apps here. Of course it's hard to spot. Read 1984 for a detailed conceptual understanding of the impact of censorship and altering history.
"migrated to a new install"
How can I be more clear? I moved Miranda portable to a freshly installed machine thinking that it was, you know, portable (silly me). Same hardware, same base install in fact.
It's not truly portable. It requires something that was on the previous machine that isn't on the new one. And of course it won't tell me what. (Which I do not blame on this group, they didn't write the base program.)
What I do blame on them is the lack of portable given the claims made here, and given the name of the domain. I'm thinking a great new name would be "mostlyportableapps.com"
It still isn't portable, I encounter the problem every time I move it. The work around is making a new install, re-downloading all the plugins, copying the log files, and re-adding my accounts.
The one and ONLY reason I'm using this instead of plain old Miranda which is in and of itself supposed to be portable, is because once you've done all that per install it is portable between different directories, like say if I move it from drive e to f it doesn't have a seizure.
My version is 7.13, and I am not upgrading until significant changes are made, like say adding an automatic upgrading tool. I'll let everyone else straddle the bleeding edge, I'm not emo enough to cut myself at this stage.
I appreciate your actual attempt to help, I'm not upset with you I'm upset with Prince John.
P.S. Sorry for the massive delay, I just came across this via a google search for the error message and I figured I'd check to see if john deleted it or something equally draconian.
I got real support (the kind you'd probably have offered) on the issue in the actual Miranda forum, which was actually helpful mainly because I got email notices when movement occurred on my thread.
Hey John. There are open source forum solutions. Some people don't have the time to stare at their last comment and hit F5 every X seconds hoping for a reply. And there's this thing called email. Look into it.
See you guys in another couple months.
Then tell us what is wrong. You can edi the title, you can edit the post. If you so feel the need, edit it to something more descriptive.
Did you did a install from this site, with no additional plugins added? I have a few that work portably.
Did you move it from X:\PortableApps\MirandaPortable to X:\MirandaPortable?
Are you Launching MirandaPOrtable.exe?
I've never ever seen a community that ever worked the way you want. My suggestion is if you can't wait, that'll be 199.99 for the live chat support.
I have been using Miranda Portable for the past yar now and have never had a problem.
Em tags mine. This is a plugin problem. Not a Miranda problem.
Finally, don't yell at us. We don't have to do anything for you. We are not paid. John is not paid. Often, John has given his OWN money to keep this site going. All of this is based on volunteers. If this support is unacceptable, purchase Trillian and sit on their help line.
