I think the idea of portable apps for linux was kind of postponed or abadoned, since it would need to be done separately for each distribution, since there is nothing like a common linux operating system existing so far.

ok, this is linux launcher with quemu vm, nice for fun and educational purposes, but as it is virtual system and the operating system on the top of it and all should run from usb stick, it is dead slow , but this is how it is.
You can also try something like virtual box and install your favourite linux distro into it.
