Free/opensource Thunderbird Windows Mobile sync solutions?

Hi Guys,

I'm again in a position where I'm unable to sync my calendar and contacts between my desktop and windows mobile phone and was hoping that someone here has a slick solution that would work for someone that's tired of fiddling to get things working...

I used to use active sync to keep my phone in sync with Outlook and would then occasionally export my contacts manually and tried to stop using calendar, but that was obviously not the best solution.

Then I found a utility "TBExport" which would simply create a .csv file that I can use to replace my Thunderbird contacts (my phone is the master for most calendar and contact data)

A better solution was finchsync which allowed me to sync my mobile directly with Thunderbird, but it was easy to break causing you to delve into the Thunderbird .ics file to fix things. It also did not supported birthday reminders set by TB extentions.

So, then I tried going via google calendar with the Provider and Zimbus extentions but is quite limited and does not support the rich mobile outlook address book. Also most of the utilities focusses on OTA (Over the air) technologies and does not take advantage of wi-fi connections. OggSync is fine for calendar but only syncs contacts on the pro/paid version. Many other utilities assumes google to be the master, totally ignoring the fact that the mobile could be the master. Assuming I can get my calendar in Lightning and sync it to GCal, the utilities does not provide an option to delete the target calender items first.

Anyway, I'm at my wit's end and am hoping someone here has a solution.

First price would be something that sync's Pocket Outlook and Thunderbird/Lightning directly via wi-fi.

Second price would be using a 3rd party web service similar to Plaxo/OggSync but something that that is open source and also plays well with PortableApps.

Thanks
Paul

Doubtful

As Windows Mobile / Outlook Mobile is an entirely closed platform designed really to only work with Windows / Outlook, there's not much work going into open source syncing technologies. BirdieSync works better than FinchSync but is paid and closed. Another option is to try and go the Funambol route.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thanks John

Hi John,

I got that impression but just had to double check. What I do not like about the paid versions is that we change our phones almost as often as there are new versions of the sources/targets available which means you have to keep on paying Beee

I'll give funambol another look. I've been "ignoring" solutions that require setting up local web/LDAP servers as my skills in this area are a bit sparse.

Thanks
Paul

Synch

You might look at Scheduleworld. It's a free Web 2.0 type site which works with the Funambol client you install on the phone. I use it with my Mobile 5.0 phone and it works pretty well.
