Add-on installed automatically without permission

On (only) some public computers, when I start Firefox Portable, an browser plugin is installed immediately without asking anything. In my Options-Advanced-Update all automatical updates are disabled. However, the plugin is not compatible with my Firefox version.

Local PC

Some plugins and things on a local PC do bad things and will try to incorporate themselves into Firefox without asking. Microsoft's .NET framework is one.

Add-on installed automatically without permission

Some more information about this case:

I see an Add-ons window with the text:
(i) 1 new add-on has been installed.
and
"Realplayer browser record plugin 1.0
Detects all recordable contents on the browser."

After disabling this add-on:
"This add-on will be disabled when Firefox is restarted."

(Earlier: "this add-on is not compatible with Firefox 3.0.4." This message didn't appear anymore.)

After disabling it, uninstall button is greyed, so I cannot uninstall it.

On another computer, I don't see the plugin anymore in the plugin list.

In my Tools-Options-Security I have in the "Allowed sites - Add-ons installation" window where "You can specify which web sites are allowed to install add-ons" an empty list.

Should I report this as a bug of Firefox, since this "allowed sites" list doesn't seem to work?

Plugin

That's a plugin, which you can't uninstall from within Firefox itself. You can only disable it. The plugin is actually on the local PC and Firefox Portable is seeing it while you're on that PC.

Is there any way to prevent this from installing?

automatic installation of AddOns in FFportable

Hi John,

I read your post on PortableApps.com, dated feb4. Did you finally get a solution for that? I have the very same problem and do not find any hint or solution.

It seems to me, that it is related to GLOBALLY installed AddOns in the local FF. Those are shown in the Add-Ons Update/Install dialog, once my FFportable is connected FIRST with a new PC, which has a local installation of FF.

This is annoying, since I distribute FFportable to a large group of service technicians, using it on tons of different PC's...

Best thing would be to configure, which globally installed AddOns are accepted, and which are neglected, once they appear on a new PC. And all that without user interaction, dialog boxes, etc..

In case you have any further information on that, I would be glad to hear from you.
kind regards,
HM

I know another two of them

one is harmless -> Java quick starter automatically installing into FFP since Runtime 6 update 10

one isn´t -> a trojan imitating "greasemonkey" add-on, see
http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2008/12/new-trojan-targets-firefox-...

perhaps you should check your drive carefully for unwanted activities...

You could try locking the

You could try locking the \extensions\ folder in the Profile folder to keep stuff from being automatically installed into Portable Firefox.
