I had a nice, happy copy of Firefox Portable 3.0.5 with Google Gears installed as per this link
Firefox 3.0.6 hits the shelves so I wait for the PortableApps.com release and install... Fire up Fx and... all my GMail Offline is gone...
I understand why... Gears has to be installed under the Apps\ folder, which the installer cleans out on update... but... could future installers be made to check for and either not delete it, or maybe backup and restore it? It should always be in exactly the same spot, after all...
Edit: The Gears 'store' is in the profile folder, so ONLY the extension is lost... not any data

Firefox extensions must install themselves to the profile and it's been that way since Firefox 1.5 (earlier, I think). All extensions should be installed to Data\profile\extensions. If Google Gears doesn't work from there, you should contact them to fix it.

John, do you think it'd be worthwhile putting something in the FFP support page about installing Gears, maybe a script to do it like the Java Portablizer? Should be easy enough.
Edit: I'd like to do it myself, if I could... it'd probably be good if I started with the same codebase though, where is the source code of the Java Portablizer? I couldn't find it on SF or anywhere...

I am sorry about the confusion, after this was brought to my attention by a reader today I updated my blog entry with this information (see link below).
\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile\extensions should be used instead of \FirefoxPortable\App\firefox\extensions if you want your Google Gears install to persist between upgrades of FireFox.
