Is there a way to do it portably?

Nope

Nope, not to my knowledge.

Hi John

Will there ever be a decent frame-based open source mpeg editor made here for the benefit of users (and hopefully your hip pocket) who come here and download things?

Does Avidemux fit the bill?

Does Avidemux fit the bill? It's in the beta testing.

ATM it works but leaves a folder behind in APPDATA folder. Been waiting for it to be updated for a while now but considering how good the app is, I'm confident it will be eventually.

MPEG1&2 Streams is what I'm after

avi or any of those microsoft only formats are useless as they change the syncing of the audio.

Anything that resamples or in effect reframes is useless really as I am using hardware based decoders and not codecs to decode the streams so to edit as recorded with only the ommission of specific frames is really what I'm hoping will be incorporated in something open source however I think MPEG generally is a licensed format so maybe we will never win the war against vested interest and just have to make do with commercially available tools when affordable.

Thank you
