Hey, folks. I've searched and searched to no avail, so I thought I'd ask here. I would like to make the portable apps menu taller, so more application icons show without scrolling. Is the size fixed, or could I add some lines to the PortableAppsMenu.ini file to accomplish this.
Thanks for your time!
Dan
you can´t do that with the official menu. You can do that with an unofficial mod R34 http://ptc.kain-planet.de/tutorials.php . But the menu looks already stuffed with 20 apps and you´d have to adjust the menu´s size by an appropriat theme of your own, so you´d better use categorizer to group your apps https://portableapps.com/node/8091

I downloaded Categorizer and it's perfect. Now things are a little neater and I can keep things I use less often in a sub-category. I appreciate your help!

Along those lines, I want to make my menu window smaller (shorter). With the coming of netbooks (my resolution is 1024 x 600), the default menu (I use a double height taskbar) causes the bottom line of the menu (size of drive left, eject, exit) fall under the top of the task bar. I would like to know how to make the menu physically smaller. Is it possible (for a neophyte) to change a setting or two to accomplish this? THX

We're debuting Advanced theming soon which will allow you to change the size of your form and have themes that have multiple sizes built in and will drop down when the screen resolution is too low to display it (that way you aren't forced to use a tiny theme on every PC or have to switch it every time).
The first 2.0 test release is coming this week but will only do Simple theming. Advanced theming will be debuting in a test release in a week or so.

Hello John
Does this mean that it may be possible for a larger PAM. I do not want to add or take any thing away from it. I just would like a bigger official one that is easier for me to see. The option to use large fonts helps but a larger official PAM would be a big help.

The PortableApps.com Menu already gets larger when you're using 120dpi fonts. And setting the fonts larger makes them bigger, too. So, I'm not really sure what else you could mean by larger... or do you want the menu even bigger?

Hello John
I would like to see a larger Meune if possible with of course larger bolder fonts used in it.
I am not wanting to add or subtract any thing from the official one. Just have a larger official one if that is the proper term. I like the official one just wish it and it's stuf were larger.

Maybe being able to scale the menu as you do with app windows when you grab the sides or corners of the window. Same thing you do with images and text boxes and images in a word processor, that would be pretty helpful right?

Then yes, you'll be able to do that with a custom theme in the 2.0 final release. Maybe I'll put together an official one. Everything would be bigger except the app icons themselves (the app names would be bigger).

Using a high contrast color scheme will help some people who have visual impairments.

hey, do u know how to make the portable apps window smaller, is there a way ro do this ?? Thanks.
Thanks John I look forward to that but if I may ask, the clicking behaviour is inconsistent, meaning a double click or single click may show or hide the menu and why does it go away just because you've opened a program?
Simple, it's a menu. Menus go away when you launch a program. Try it on Windows (95 through Windows 7). Try it in Ubuntu. That's the way menus work.
The tray icon only understands single clicks. Click to show. Click to hide. Also when it loses focus (when you click on another window) it hides. Same reason, all menus do.

..but could I ever have it Always on Top, since then I could just single click and it go away.
It's not my program I know but seriously I cannot hide things as what was promised at all unless I'm doing something wrong.

I don't know if it was supposed to work on prior versions but it's working now which is fantastic since I can now just "go to" the menu and open almost anything I want.
I'm very happy about that but still I don't understand why I cannot hide icons, an oversight perhaps?

It goes without saying it's a bit of a "geek" method but still glad it's there at least, maybe a checkbox instead perhaps?
I guess that GUI checkboxes work better for people who

Actually I think he's talking about something that's fast becoming a GUI standard. While not as much a staple of daily desktop computing as the close box, for example, or the raised button, to name another, the pin icon, while confusing at first, is making its way onto the desktop. A pinnable window appears with an ajar push pin; clicking the push pin 'pins' it to the adult window or the sidebar, however it's set up. Or I could be mistaken, but a push pin up in the corner or somewhere to make the app stick around wouldn't be inappropriate.
Actually, I was trying to make a point myself.
He is a new kind of troll. Instead of asking inflaming questions to spur responses, he asks ridiculous questions that anybody can answer so that somebody, ANYBODY, will answer. And once he has you, he keeps it up. A constantly moving target that is so inane that he has you playing "whack a mole" forever.
Doesn't this thing have an ignore button?

I really hate bumping this diatribe but I must:
Jimmy,
You are a little out of line here, calling him a troll in this case is uncalled for, many folks just ignore your comments without a button

Thanks for the reply John. I will await your official incorporation of this ability.
By the way, I have not yet thanked you for Portable Apps. Your efforts in this endeavor are to be lauded.
Since I'm using this netbook more and more, and given it's limited drive space, I've joined up a good cadre of Portable Apps on a 350 GB Western Digital Passport drive. Using the netbook, Passport, USB powered DVD-RW drive and Portable Apps gives me a full blown desktop that I slip into my pocket (OK, maybe not into my pocket, but I also host at a host that offers unlimited resources, so I may have been taking some literary marketing license there :D)

yo guys dont you know what is the
RESOURCE HACKER????????????????????????????

It's not stored like that. That won't change co-ordinates. Et cetera. Resource Hacker, ResHacker and the likes just won't work, can't work.

With 1.5.2 I right-clicked on all the applications (to remove the word "portable") yet the width of the menu doesn't change. Would be better if it extended to the left only as far as necessary rather than being a fixed width.
but on the desktop I don't mind personally. I'm simply glad it can stay there for as long as needed. Supposedly it was meant to be able to do this under the older version, however I could not get it to work so was annoyed by all the clicking but it's better now.
I think it would be good to be able to pull it to size, ie via a footplate but that would kinda ruin the look of it I reckon so maybe not a good idea.
Basically as Bruce said, something needs to be done about using the keyboard as opposed to the mouse, that I believe would make it much more useable even if you still had to click it once to gain focus.
To the above poster, that would be the only way possible.
I see the request to "make the menu taller" in 2009... has this been done yet? I would like to increase the height of the menu as well (so I don't have to scroll up/down). Thx!
