Can I Install non-portable app?

Hi,

I'm new to these portable applications. Just like to find out something..
Other then those applications shown on this site, can i install other apps of my own choice?

For example Microsoft Office 2007, Dreamweaver or Adobe Photoshop?

Of those three, no

Basically no. Not legally.

The first and most obvious reason is that those are all copyrighted, commercial programs, and PortableApps.com won't help you break the law. Even if you're really a licensed user, the EULA says you can't modify the program, and you'd need to modify the program to make it portable, so - basically no.

However OpenOffice does most of what Microsoft Office does (though not quite as pretty), The GIMP does what Photoshop does (less the warez scene cred), and I forget what Dreamweaver does at this point.

There are other apps you can use. The apps featured on this site are just that, featured. There are non-featured apps you can find if you go digging, but they're not up to spec... which means they're usually OK, just not as thoroughly tested. And then there are launchers for programs that PA.com can't modify (haven't been given permission), so they just give you the launcher and you put it with the app and you're good to go. And then there's just using regular old portable freeware on the menu. If you need help with that let us know and I or someone else will go into it, but for the three apps you named, we can't help you there, sorry.

Kompozer, though not as

Kompozer, though not as feature rich and advanced as Dreamweaver is also a WYSIWYG Web Editor. You can find Kompozer, Gimp and OpenOffice by clicking on Applications page in the navigation menu at the top of the screen.

Sure you can

Yes, you can install apps that you own to your USB drive for your personal use. However, doing so does not mean they are portable in the sense they will leave nothing behind on the host, or will even work on a different host. A portable app requires more work than just installing an app to a removable device.

If that was all there was to it everything would be portable, and if you read the posts here you will see it takes a fair amount of effort to make an app portable.

Cause I'll using that flash drive purely for 1 host.
my own hdd has too little space.
only 8gb.
was hoping i could install those apps into the flash drive instead of the local drive.

So if its only for 1 host, is that fine?

and flash drives have limited write cycles

as well as being usually made with cheaper components.

So far, there are 6-7 portable HDDs here at work, none have ever failed.

I have personally had 3 dead flash drives (mechanical failure of the connector usually) from cheap suppliers.

True, I agree there's a

True, I agree there's a limited write cycles.

But I am only installing the application on it. As for the rest of the time, I'll probably be reading off the flash drive instead of writing on it.

I've used a few portable hard drives and never had any faulter. I may be wrong as I aint a techie but couldn't one always pull a part a portable hard drive to retrieve the data with software if need be. Same as a regular hard drive. Where as a flash drive uses a different setup that might make it harder?
