Packet Tracer 5.1

This tool is an essential part of the planning process of network design and structure. it allows you to see each process of encapsulation the packets go through a built network. It would be so helpful to have a portable version of this to show people your designed network and operation without having to priorly install the software
here is a link to the software (free download for cisco netacad students);

here is the page from the cisco site:

Isn't it the one that asks you to run winpcap installer every time you start it?
Seriously, that's not portable. The only advantage over regular non-portable software is that it starts installer / uninstaller for you and therefore saves 4 clicks.

And IIRC it has issues with x64 OSes.

you'll need the 64 bit driver

you'll need the 64 bit driver then. How many 64 bit oses do you use on a regular version. Granted, my exploration into the "wild" is fairly small, but I don't think I've seen a 64 bit machine that actaully runs a 64 bit os.

Yes, that is the one.

You cisco will also require a driver (or only work with stuff on cisco, I don't know). It will also require money for anyone not taking a cisco class. I'm not, and I don't have money just to buy some packet sniffer when WireShark does the job well enough for me.

As far as being more portable, it takes care of some other things to, I'm assuming. I haven't a reason to look at the source right now, but I know it handles some config files.

I use regularly 1 machine

I use regularly 1 machine with x64 OS and a bunch of x86 ones.
Fortunately I need it very rarely. Then I just install MS packet sniffer. As portable as Wireshark (read: not at all), has x64 version and I just like it more, it's not so ugly.

I use several systems that have more than 4GB of RAM, so I must run a 64-bit OS to take advantage of it.

Fair enough. But none of the computers here at the college are 64 bit (except maybe the servers, and do they let me play with those, no :p)

i use wireshark aswell but

i use wireshark aswell but for sniffing live networks, but packet tracer allows you to set up a whole network virtually and allows you to test the flow of data across your virtual network. its not actually a packet sniffer like wireshark its just a tool to simulate what would happen if you had devices in particular arrangments. you can also program each individual device as you would a real computer.

Isn't Packet Tracer a network simulation.

Sorry for replying to such an old comment.

I agree that Wireshark is an essential learning tool someone wanting to become a networking expert. However, it is illegal were I currently live (Germany). It looks like Packet Tracer lets you build a virtual network and play with it rather than sniffing an actual network.

IIllegal?

Even on your own network or one you have permission to use it on? I think (I'm certainly no legal expert) that it's only legal in the UK if the above is the case. If you're really using it as a learning tool that shouldn't be a problem though

I agree

To have a portable version of Packet Tracer 5.1 would be of great use to students in networking and for people to use in the design stage of networks. It is a great tool in visualizeing the network as a whole.

Very Usefull

Hi,

I Use Packet tracer a lot for my work as a system manager. If I with Costumers and user it is usefull to have Packet tracer to explane what I mean.

I made a launcher

I made a launcher for PacketTracer 5.1: https://portableapps.com/node/21373
You must copy the files from a local installation to "App\PacketTracer\"
PacketTracer Portable looks for the "PacketTracer5.exe" at "App\PacketTracer\bin\PacketTracer5.exe"
I am working on PacketTracer 5.2 Portable.

PC Welt (PC World) reported it in October, 2008.

The original article was entitled "Verbotene Hacker-Tools" (Forbidden Hacking Tools). Here is a link to the online article:

Illegale Tools
http://www.pcwelt.de/start/software_os/systemtools/praxis/184647/diese_h...

Wireshark is #15 in the list.

Looking through the article, there is a part that mentions the German legal code, but my German is very poor, so I cannot tell if there is an exception for applications that were in existence before the law was passed.

Here are relevant parts I pasted into Google Translate.

-----

These hacking tools are illegal!

What may be downloaded from the Internet and what is not? Here are the current legal situation and a survey of 15 popular illegal tools.

Forbidden hacking tools

Hacking tools, copy protection breaker that will unlock stuff: What is allowed, what is forbidden? Tools for getting goods eavesdropping the network traffic a half years ago still legal, you can make today have an offense with the download.

In the PC-WELT 10/2008 had presented us 15 twilight tools, which can also serve a legitimate and useful purpose. The result: The German Press Council issued the PC World article because of a public reprimand.

....

Law: hacking tools

In August 2007, Germany has implemented EU rules to combat computer crime. Section 202c of the Penal Code holds under "Preparing for the interception and interception of data ': Who prepares an offense under § 202a (espionage of data) or § 202b (interception of data) by computer programs, the purpose of committing such an act is produced, himself or someone else gives, sells, another leaves, distributed or otherwise makes available, shall be punished with imprisonment up to one year or a fine.

....

Wireshark

With Wireshark (former name: Ethereal) allows the entire network traffic recorded a personal computer and analyzed. Other PCs on the network can be eavesdropped, but only if the computers are connected via hubs. Hubs nowadays occur rarely, as a rule, we find switches that separate the data stream as equipment. Wireshark shows each transmitted packet individually. On the context menu function "Follow TCP Stream" can trace the complete TCP connection, which occurs in the selected package.

-----

EDIT: I saw some forums just now with people saying that the software is not illegal because it can be downloaded via mainstream download sites that operate in German, such as ZDNet. The German Wikipedia article on Wireshark mentions that the activity of unauthorized network eavesdropping is a crime, but I did not see anything regarding possession of the software itself. Those are good signs.
