Portable Apps and hibernation...

Hi All,

I've found that whenever XP is restored from hibernation it does not reload my USD HDD... I can't remember if this is the case for flash drives, but USB HDD's does not get assigned a drive letter after restoring from hibernation.

Before I started using portable apps this was not a problem as I could merely eject the HDD and plug it in again to restor "My Documents" which is mapped to my USB HDD.

The problem with running portable apps from the same drive is that any open applications simply gets "killed" as they no longer exist according to XP.

Any thoughts on how to get around this problem?

Thanks
Paul

Odd

That's odd... and I don't think that should be happening. I'll try it on my laptop and see what happens here. Is it just hibernation? or standby too?

Hibernation only

Hi John,

It only happens after hibernation. It's the same on both my notebooks (IBM & HP) running XP SP2.

Confirmed

Hi John,

Ok I can confirm that it is only when the power to the USB HDD is removed that XP does not assign a drive letter to it, i.e. when the USB HDD is plugged in before the notebook is switched on for a normal boot or return from hibernation.

I double checked and it only seems to happen on my HP notebook not my IBM. Both machines run the same OS & SP. I run ZoneAlarm firewall on both, but Norton System Works on the HP and Zone Alarm Security Suite on the IBM.

Where should I start scratching?

Regards
Paul

Try a USB flash drive

Have you tried a USB flash drive? Not to switch to, but to see if the behavior is the same or not. If it's the same, then there's an issue with the USB subsystem on the HP and the only really fix is to reinstall the OS (that's the way to fix most really oddball Windows issues). If it isn't the same, then it may be the way that specific USB HD powers up when the computer first connects to it... and another enclosure may do a better job of things.

Of course, simply not letting it hibernate would be the easy fix. Just set your power settings not to hibernate when it's plugged in.
