OpenOffice.org (OO.o) has an extention that gives it PDF editing/importing capabilities. It already has PDF export. Heres the link: http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/pdfimport
Download it, then open the OO.o Extention manager, and install it.

Someone please explain the "00.o extention manager" in laymans terms. I understand how to download but not quite how to install the file in Open Office...

when you open for example open office writer, then under menu tools you will find an entry extension manager.
It looks then quite similar as addons manager in firefox or thunderbird.
You download then the extension and install it with the aid of this tool, it is quite ergonomic otherwise, so you will find it.
