Hello. I have an 8gb Kingston. I have some personal files on my usb stick. I need a folder hider to keep them unseen. 'Cause sometimes I lend my pendrive to a friend. Is there a way or a portable app. that prevents people from seeing certain folders even on diffrent computers unless some kind of password is entered.
My personal favorite to do this is True Crypt ( http://www.truecrypt.org ). This is free and open source software that lets you encrypt a number of ways; one of which is to create a file which actually contains folders and individual files. You can even hide the encrypted data so it can't be seen. To open the file, you must 'mount' the file and enter the password. It is portable, but you can't access the encrypted information unless the True Crypt device driver can be installed (administrator rights) or has separately been installed.
As i understand you can not access to your data on computer that does not have mentioned drivers. That is a pickle. I'll give it a try anyway. Thanks..
I had one more idea for you; a second flash drive WITHOUT the confidential info; use that to loan out. With sizable drives in the $7-$10 range (US), that may be the simplest solution.
carrying two drives would be difficult but thanks anyway..
This is coming in the platform itself in an upcoming release. It won't be in 1.6 (which is in testing) but will be in the release after (or after that depending on what we put in and when). Expect to see a test release with it in a few weeks.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
You can always drop the personal files in 7-zip, make a password-protected archive.
Then again, you could also move the files off the flash drive before loaning it out.
16GB flash drives are falling, should be $20 soon (at least on Newegg). Consider buying up a bunch of 2GB flash drives on the cheap, setting them all up with PortableApps software, maybe customize Portable Firefox with Adblock Plus and other useful stuff, and give them out as gifts. (I actually have a friend in mind for this; the only reason we have Firefox installed locally on our computer is so he can use it. My wife and I each have copies of Portable Firefox on an external hard drive, so we don't have to backup/restore settings when I reformat/reinstall Windows.)
And thank you all for your time..
