I have been using pidgin portable for a year or so, and just recently started using ubuntu. Does anyone know how to transfer settings from pidgin portable to pidgin for linux? and vice versa?

sure. I did that after I installed my new ubuntu
basically, find the .purple directory in your linux. you'll have to turn on being able to see hidden files
copy whatever settings you have in the windows version (.purple directory) into the linux .purple directory
