Is a secure delete utility really necessary for a flsh drive? I understand that the nature of flash drive is using solid state RAM as a storage medium and using on or off. I also know that on magnetic media there is always a trace left behind of anything because of the way the technology works.
I am curious about this also.
The reason is most secure delete programs rewrite random data several times, thus shortening drive life.
So is it really necessary? Can files be reconstructed on a USB Flash drive if only the PC file system deletes them?

I have CyberShredder on my thumbdrive, but have always used it to delete sensitive files on physical media, not on the thumbdrive...
I will try to ask the cybershredder makers if they know.
I let you know if I get an answer before someone here volunteers one.

Hi,
thanks for your email. The idea behind flash media is yes, different
than magnetic media. However, files deleted normally on flash drives
can stille be undeleted. CyberShredder (and many more shredders) does
not just overwrite the storage space that files occupy. It renames
the file, changes the file's entry in the File Allocation Table and
then deletes the file, so that no trace of the file can be found by
undelete tools. It is true that you do not need to 7-pass overwriting
that you need on hard-drives to completely erase the data of a file,
a 1-pass erase would do just fine on Flash.
The "Very Quick Shred" method of CyberShredder does just that. A
1-pass erase of the file's data, which is ideal for Flash Drives.
I hope that answers your question.
