Generic Vs. Name Brand Thumb Drives

I've had a Lexar 128 MB Jump Drive Sport for about two years now, but I never got much use out of it until I found this site. Now I'm finding that 128 MB just ins't enough for my apps and all my files.

While browsing eBay, I noticed that there are several "no name" brands of thumb drives being sold for next to nothing. Has anyone ever used a no-name brand? Are they all the same, or is it worth paying more for a brand name?

Hit or miss

They can be hit or miss. Sometimes, they have the same stuff as in the name brand. Other times, it's a slow controller and slow flash ram. There's about a 40x difference between a fast one and a slow one. Look to see if they give read/write specs. That might help.

I use a no-name one

Well actually it's from Dick Smith Electronics/Tandy.
The same ones but with different branding cost AUD$50 more.
And mines faster Wink

Hard the beat the price!

I just saw a 1 GB, no-name drive selling for $8 on eBay, including shipping.
Even if it has a slow transfer rate, its hard to beat that price.

Unless, of course, it dies in two weeks...

Well,

at least you only spent $8 dollars. You can always buy another one. (unless you're poor, in which case you probably wouldn't be here)

Err?

I'm poor and I'M here. No offense, but I feel you've insulted poor people. What reason did you have to quip such garbage?

One of the Goals

Actually, one of the reasons PortableApps.com exists is so that people can use great apps like these without having to buy anything. That's why I've made them so that they can run from anywhere (USB flash drive, iPod, desktop, network share, CD, etc). Lots of folks install them to a device they already have. Or on one of those giveaway flash drives that drug and tech companies supply. Or on a network share at university so they can use their stuff on any university computer without having to buy a device to carry around. True, the generic drives often use lower quality components and will, thus, run the apps slower. But they'll still run. And I'm doing what I can to speed them up (like the new Intelligent Start system in Firefox Portable 1.5.0.7/2.0 RC1).

Incidentally, I don't think Ryan meant any offense with his remarks.

Hey,

I'm sure that he didn't mean anything, it's just that if you can afford web access to get the apps then you can probably afford another $8 pendrive, of course you might be using a friends internet connection, but thats a story for another day.

Not offensive.

Just mispoken.

Poor means you have no money and no hope or ambition.
